Flying. It was the class she dreaded above all else. Flying wasn’t something she could learn in a book and it wasn’t natural, not according to physics. Every time she climbed on the back of a broom, she was nervous and off balanced, frightened of every hint of a breeze.
For years, she battled her insane fear. But it wasn’t until she climbed on the Firebolt, wrapped her arms around Harry’s waist, and allowed him to take her flying that she felt in harmony with the wind.
She found her courage, opened her eyes, and took his gift of flight.

“Hermione,” Harry said, “I don’t understand. You hate flying on broomsticks but you are willing to fly in this tin can.”
Hermione rolled her eyes, “Oh honestly, Harry, it’s a bit more than a tin can. Besides, it’s the only way to get to America.”
“I still don’t see why we couldn’t have Apparated.” Harry grumbled, glancing down at the piece of gum she shoved into his hand, “What’s this for?”
Tucking a stand of hair behind one ear, Hermione grinned, “It helps you equalize the pressure in your ears.” At his blank look, she explained, “Makes your ears ‘pop.’”
