I figure that qualifies as daring and ambitious. :) I think part of the inspiration for the dragon-hunting idea was the feeling that while unthinking recklessness probably wasn't Mr.-Cunning-and-Resourceful's style, someone whose hallmark is ambition and who would do anything to accomplish his goals hardly comes off as over-cautious, either.

I love your depiction of an actual friendship between the two. I've not seen many people who can pull off that.

I really strongly prefer stories that do take the friendships into account, myself. I've read some very impressive work by superb authors who opted (as far as I can tell) to ignore it completely, or assume the hat is in error or taking liberties with the story... but I really hope that's not the case.
