Spring took Hogwarts by surprise. There had been a few signs, of course: green shoots had appeared, as if by magic, scattered in isolated clumps around the lake; a pair of swallows had attempted to build their nest in the groundskeeper’s hut - Hagrid would have known what that meant, but he was dead. So both students and teachers were unprepared when, after months of grey skies and greyer faces, they trooped into breakfast to find the ceiling reflecting soft blue light onto their upturned faces.
It felt vaguely insulting, as though nature didn’t care there was a war on.
