Nobody knew he still thought about him a hundred times a day. His friends tried to be supportive, but they couldn’t understand. He’d started lying to them, saying he was doing fine. He’d spent most of his life never knowing he existed, and only a few short days physically with him, it should be easy to pretend he was still alive and well, just elsewhere. He tried to remember the good times, and not the end. Sometimes that strategy worked, but more often it backfired, leaving him in tears. There was a fine line between remember when and never again.
