It had nearly broken Hermione’s heart, when she found out. She and Harry had been trying for years - and now they knew why.
“I’m a failure!” she’d sobbed. Harry patted her back awkwardly, as Ron looked on, helpless…
…but not Ginny.
They’d been absolutely overwhelmed by the offer, and refused immediately, of course - nobody could accept such a gift. But Ginny was insistent.
“It’s a simple procedure, Hermione - and you know us Weasleys, it’ll definitely work…Besides, I love you two. Let me do this.”
And yesterday, at last, a message on the phone:
“Congratulations, Mum and Dad - I’m late.”

Ron stumbled into the apartment, cursing softly as his thigh met the hall table. He was surprised to find Harry waiting up for him.
“Sit down, Ron.”
Sensing a trap, Ron staggered to the couch, rolling his eyes nastily.
“M’just a bit late, s’all.”
“You’ve been ‘a bit late’ for months, now.”
“So? What’re you, my wife?!” Ron slurred, his vision blurring with tears and Firewhiskey.
“You have to stop,” Harry pleaded, “She would want you to.”
The ache of her empty reading chair hit him hard, her unfinished book face-down on the armrest, undisturbed.
“I can’t,” he choked quietly.

House: Hufflepuff
Challenge: Late
Characters: Ginny, Weasleys, Harry, Hermione
Author Notes: I don’t know why I’m so angsty lately. Sorry.
“Sorry! Sorry I’m late!” Ginny chirped, slamming the front door thunderously, “Work was murder. You can all yell ‘Surprise’ now, I promise…I’ll…”
Harry and everyone were seated somberly at the kitchen table. The twins were silent. Even Bill and Charlie had made it…
“Gosh,” Ginny said, her smile feeling strained and plastic, “Is this a birthday party or a funeral?”
Ron’s shoulders shuddered, and he buried his face in his hands. Hermione carefully put a hand on his back, as though he might break if handled too roughly.
“Sweetie…It’s Daddy,” her mother began softly.
The floor lurched under her feet.

Author Notes: Here’s a happy one to make up for it
“Hello? Hello?”
Harry groaned and rolled over. It’d been such a nice dream - he’d been with Sirius, on his motorbike, laughing, flying…Why did he have to wake up?
“Harry?”
Harry froze, and his eyes snapped open in the dark.
The voice was coming from his trunk…
With shaking hands, Harry undid the clasps, taking out each schoolbook, each item of clothing, one by one…until he reached the broken shards…
“Hi,” said a soft, familiar voice.
“I’m still dreaming,” Harry whispered, tears streaking down his face.
“Sorry I’m late,” a thousand shattered Siriuses grinned softly, “Well, in a manner of speaking.”
