"She’s beyond saving, Sirius," his best friend had said. "I don't know why you even bother thinking about it. She's cracked." But Remus's amber eyes weren’t so sure, saying Aren't we supposed to believe that no-one is completely irredeemable?
Sirius sat back, pushing his dark hair from his eyes. She’d always been proud, stubborn, and fiery, but there had been a time she hadn’t been evil. Part of him wanted to bring that Bella back, to have his childhood playmate restored to him. They had been friends, in a way. He didn’t want to believe James was right about her.

It's you, Bella. She could still hear Orion Black’s voice in her head as she sat down at her desk and pulled out a leaf of parchment. You can save him. We've already lost one Black as a traitor. Let's do our best not to lose another one. Show him the truth. Bring him back to us. You two were such good friends once. Bellatrix hesitated, thinking of that. Was that what they'd been, when they hadn’t been trying to hex each other into oblivion? Friends?
She dipped her quill into the dark ink and began to write: Dear Sirius-
