Y'all won't care

But I want to remember this one.

Kickball. Wednesday, August 4, 2004. Y**** Elementary School. It was raining. The Cheaters had the required eight players, but not enough women. The Lunch Money All Stars had only six players and two girls. We wanted to play. The captain of LMAS didn't. It had passed the 10 minute alotted window to get a girl to play with us. LMAS called the game. The ref concurred. Neither team could legally field a game. We both forfeit, resulting in a tie.

That left me a free agent.

The other game at the field, the Mt. Hoodlums versus the Ballbusters, hadn't started yet. They both wanted to play, but they were waiting for the results of our game to see if the Mt. Hoodlums could cadge a couple of female players. Their teams and ref were much more patient than ours. colleen recruited me to play.

Fielding was brutal. I was floating, somewhere behind second base. But I don't know to do enough when I'm actually 2nd baseman, let along figure out what I should do when I'm that close but don't have to do anything. At least I didn't have any errors. In fact, I never touched the ball. (I consider that a successful game.)

Then came kicking. (maybe this was my second time up?) There were 2 outs. The bases were loaded. They told me to kick. Fortunately, they were wrong. Someone else got to boot in a couple of the runs. But then it was my turn. I was scared. Mt. Hoodlums are good, the Cheaters ain't. I ain't. I have a bad habit of kicking pop flies. Regardless, colleen is very competitive, and she was gonna kill me if I screwed up. So, I walked up. One ball. One strike. Two strikes and you're out in kickball... I was scared. I bunted. It didn't pop up. It didn't fly right to the 2nd baseman waiting to cath it. The catcher didn't catch it. I made it to first base. SAFE. Next time, same thing. Bunt. (They should have know.) I think that meant that whoever was on 2nd couldn't run in. I screwed that up. A sacrifice grounder to first would have been a better play. Alhtough that might have been the 3rd out, so a sacrifice wouldn't work. So I guess I did OK by getting on base, and hoping that the next batter could kick it far enough to get everyone in. No luck for them - but I was in the clear. One more at bat. I decided they'd know about the bunt. So I kicked it. It didn't pop up. It went between 3rd and 2nd - the ideal hole. I made it to base AGAIN. But then there was another out behind me. So I never made it home. But I didn't get an out. colleen didn't have to kill me.

In fact. One of the other Hoodlums called me an All Star. In public no less. Said I was good. Was surprised the Cheaters sucked. (I guess he's never seen me play for the Cheaters. I'm no good when I think no one's going to kill me. I guess I just need the pressure.)
