Whether we like it or not, tomorrow night the Idols will be performing the music of Mariah Carey. I'm definitely in the not liking it camp, mostly because I was hoping this would be the week for that rumored iTunes Top 100 theme, but nope, not happening. It's gotta be all about Mimi since her new album comes out tomorrow. So, here's my attempt at playing MC musical matchmaker for the Idols...
David Archuleta
"Make It Happen" -- if only because it fits his inspirational criteria. (Sample lyrics: If you believe in yourself enough/And know what you want/You're gonna make it happen/Make it happen) Plus it's fairly upbeat, so he can shush the "But he only sings ballads!!!" critics for a bit. And, there is plenty of opportunity for runs and glorynoting in this early Mariah hit.
Kristy Lee Cook
"Dreamlover" -- I can just imagine her singing this for some reason. It's not extremely rangey, so she could stay in her comfort zone. Since she has the Hot Girl factor working in her favor, she might as well work it and play up the flirty lyrics.
Jason Castro
"Can't Let Go" -- I feel like this week is going to be the toughest on Jason. I think he has a really pretty voice, but obviously he doesn't have the range for Mariah's power ballads, and all of her more recent, mid-tempo hits are so stylized, I can't hear Jason (or any of the others for that matter *kicks TPTB*) singing them either. So, I went with this soft Mariah tune, because I think he could probably find a way to tailor it to his voice without straying too far from the original.
Syesha Mercado
"Emotions" -- On paper, this should be the week for Syesha to shine, but eh...she'll probably pick a song that's too big for her. "Emotions" would be a good choice for her, I think. It will allow her to really push her vocals and go for some big notes, but she needs to know her limits and pick her moments wisely.
David Cook
"Hero" -- I really think he could bring down the house with this. His brother Adam, who's battling cancer, will be in the audience this week, so it would be even more poignant. I get teary-eyed just thinking about it. *sniffles*
Brooke White
"Butterfly" -- She could probably accompany herself on piano and pull this off. I'd like to see her wow people this week! C'mon, Brooke!!
Carly Smithson
Well, we already know she's singing
"Without You" but I'd rather hear her sing
"Someday" as an eff you to MCA Records. Heh.
Good luck Idols! You're gonna need it, bbs.
And just because, if someone held a gun to my head and forced me to name my favorite Mariah song, it'd be "Heartbreaker," b/c the video is so much fun!
