On December 5, 2008, between 7 and 8 PM, HPD officers were dispatched to the area of Whitman Street and Carson Driver for a carjacking which had just occurred. The victim, a 21-year-old male out of Alameda, reported that three suspects had just taken his car at gunpoint and tried to force him into another vehicle. The victim’s car was a 1985 Cadillac sedan. The victim sustained moderate injuries as a result of being assaulted by the suspects. The vehicle was not located, and was entered into the Stolen Vehicle System data base.
On December 14, 2008 about 12:15 AM, a Hayward Police Department patrol officer attempted to make a traffic stop on the stolen Cadillac on Inglewood Street, in a residential neighborhood. Dispatch advised the officer that it had been stolen in an armed carjacking. The driver of the Cadillac refused to pull to the side of the road, initially fleeing from the officer. The car was occupied by three males. The car slowed on Tennyson Road and the doors opened, indicating to the officer that the occupants were going to flee on foot. The officer got out of the patrol car to chase the suspects. The driver of the Cadillac then attempted to run over the officer, who fired multiple rounds at the driver in defense of the officer’s life. Two of the car’s occupants fled on foot and another was found hiding in the car and was taken into custody. Police dogs and a police helicopter were used to search for the outstanding suspects, to no avail. The suspect in custody is a 14-year-old male out of Union City. The other suspects are outstanding. It does not appear that the suspects were struck by the rounds. Area hospitals had been notified.
The officer was not injured during this incident and is on routine administrative leave. This incident is still under investigation.
The outstanding suspects are preliminarily described as:
Black male, late teens, 5’8”, 150, long braided hair possibly with light-colored tips; wearing a black jacket and black beanie cap.
Black male, late teens, 5’6”-5’8”, thin build, wearing a black jacket.
