Film Review: The Road

Last night I finally got to watch the movie adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's book The Road. Don't read any Wiki articles about it unless you want to be thoroughly spoiled. Any spoilers I will have will be below the cut, so no worries. Everything above the cut is pretty much a comparison between the book and the film.

If you read any post-apocalyptic books that are decent, toss their names my way. I once made a list of such books to read but have since lost it.

If you're interested in Chernobyl, I recommend "The Sky Unwashed" (forgot the author's name). Its fictional but loosely based on her own family's experience, so it is authentic to what many families went through when the reactor went through melt-down, where people had to be shuffled off to, etc. It mostly follows this family matriarch who then returns to Prypiat, I think, to live out the rest of her life there despite the radiation. Its not an adventure or anything and is very "old world" but it gave a very good illustration of a real-world event and the 'fallout' of that disaster, pun not intended.

"Z For Zachariah" is my favorite young adult novel that takes place in a post-nuclear apocalyptic world. It was a Battle of the Books book when I was a kid. Its written like a journal by this girl who is the sole survivor, living in a tiny mountain valley farming town. She's able to survive by continuing the farming - until some stranger arrives in a radiation suit.

Ohh, on that list I have read and highly recommend Santa Olivia (the protagonist is queer!), World War Z and The Hunger Games and its sequel Catching Fire. I think I have reviews for all these in my LJ under my book review tag if it interests you.

I see Z for Zachariah is listed, too! Its simplistic since it is young adult fiction but makes for a good read in a day. I've also read Day of the Triffids - it is extremely dated (1950s or so) but it makes it funny - still, it is a very interesting plot and worth the read.

I've got that list bookmarked now - I recognize several of the titles as having been on my post-apocalyptic "to read" list. *rubs hands together maniacally*
