Obviously major spoilers.
Just some thoughts and theories - ties in with the Lost Experience.
For starters,
http://lostpedia.com/wiki/Main_Page (LostPedia) seems to be the best website for all the facts for the show. There's no shortage of theories as well, though I generally ignore those as many of them are outdated or just silly. The facts are good and easy to navigate, though, making it handier than most other Lost sites I've seen. It also handles info on the Lost Experience immersion game that is going on.
Are any of you Lost watchers also playing along with the Lost Experience game?
My sister and I sort of are. It's hard to do the online stuff on dialup and some of the clues are SO hard we just miss them altogether. The Lost Experience area at the LostPedia is up to date with the game and all the clues, though. We've called the phone number for the Hanso Foundation and listened to all the menus and messages and hacked some of the clue sites, though. Also saw Hugh McIntyre from the Hanso Foundation on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night after the finale episode of Lost. Innnnnteresting.
So. For the episode itself.
I KNEW the Pearl was a mind game! I couldn't believe all those tubes laying there! Holy cow. I'd kind of thought both the Pearl and the Swan were mind games, though. Except the whole electromagnetic study thing... Like it said in the Orientation film for the Swan, the Dharma Initiative researches meteorology, psychology, parapsychology, zoology, electromagnetism, and utopian social (engineering?)". [
LostPedia: Dharma Initiative] So I guess it would of made sense to believe them. Particularly since the Swan film was newer than the Pearl video. The video was probably older than the two Incidents (there were two, according to the
Blast Door Map). Maybe pressing the button to release electromagnetic energy to keep it from building up too much wasn't such a big deal in the past. The Swan was probably there to study this anomaly - the anomaly was there before the DI was and it wasn't being destructive on its own, so maybe something the DI did made it destructive to where humans had to baby-sit it with the 108 machine.
Libby
There is a theory (I thought of this myself as well) that she is actually
Liddy Wales from the board of directors of the Hanso Foundation. Besides the first name thing:
• At the airport,
Charlotte Malkin, the psychic's daughter, is trying to talk to Eko and tell him about his brother Yemi. Eko tries to make Charlotte go away, things are loud, and Libby approaches and asks if everything is okay, and she gives Charlotte a "look" that people say was kind of knowing or purposeful. Hmmm.
• Libby just happens to have a boat to give to Desmond to help him to run away -- far from Charles Widmore's daughter.
• Libby was at the same mental institute as Hurley and Leonard (the guy who told Hurley the Numbers), watching them.
• "Libby" as she's known on the island, is short for Elizabeth. Her husband was named "David" -- "Dave" is short for David. Dave was Hurley's "imaginary" friend in the institution... or was he?
So by all this, what if Libby was actually working for the Widmore? The Dharma Initiative was shut down in 1987, but its facilities on the island are still going and are ALLOWED to keep running (like the Swan) - why? Someone must know, someone must be watching. And most of us still believe the plane was made to crash with those specific people onboard. Looking at it this way, Libby looks like she's working for Widmore -- it looks like she helped to get Desmond away from Penelope and on his journey by supplying him with a boat - his means of getting to the Island. She was at the mental hospital, watching Leonard and Hurley. Leonard had direct contact with The Numbers and it made him crazy -- SOMEONE from the DI or Widmore or the Hanso Foundation would of heard of this and would have someone watching. Why watch Hurley? Who knows - maybe Libby could actually project images into people's minds. Maybe she helped create Dave in Hurley's mind to get Hurley to break out so he could be on his way toward the Island (which of course didn't happen, but he DID eventually get out). And then Libby was conveniently there on the island to further track Hurley, a Numbers user. And perhaps Libby was in Australia in contact with the Malkin family -- a family responsible for TWO people, Eko and Claire, being on the plane when they were.
Just a complex theory. Who knows.
Very cool we got to see more of Desmond and his past. I hope everyone recognized Kelvin as the US military dude who basically taught Sayid how to torture. It sounded like he actually signed UP for the Dharma Initiative - he SAID "signed up". If the plane crashed in 2004, Desmond was there for three years at that point, meaning Desmond got there in 2001. If the DI was shut down in 1987, Kelvin had to of been in the hatch for at least 17 years by the time Desmond kills/knocks out & severely injures Kelvin. That's a LONG TIME.
Unless of course the DI has some unsanctioned faction that is still running. Which could explain the Others.
Guesses/Questions for Next Season
Who thinks Locke, Eko, and Desmond live? How the hell did Charley live anyway? He was down some side corridor, right? I didn't think he was near the exit doors. So if he was inside, the other three could also still be alive. Also, Desmond could be alive - if someone builds a failsafe into something, don't they generally make the failsafe button/switch/keyturning area relatively safe for the person turning it on? Because how many people would normally sacrifice themselves so willingly?
And if they do live, will they have to dig themselves out/be dug out?
Also, I didn't think we'd seen the last of the Blast Door Map yet. I can't belive it's total fanservice at this point - it HAS to come up again, unless Jack kept Locke's piece of paper he found on the Tube Pile. So if we haven't seen the last of the Blast Door Map, then part of the Swan still has to be there.
Will anyone else come across the pile of tubes from the Pearl?
Will Michael and Walt go back to save their friends? OR -- and this is good -- will they follow their heading and get rescued, only to somehow meet up with Penelope Widmore who will then get their help in cracking open the mystery of the island in order to rescue her beloved Desmond (and everyone else deserving of rescue on the island)? That'd be interesting to see the show get off the island more that way. Corporate lies, secrets, and backstabbing.
I wonder if 'Henry' isn't Him. THE 'him' that the rest of the Others bow to. He seemed to be in charge on the pier - Tom (Mr.Friendly) certainly seemed subordinate to him. And dude, we know he's eerily manipulative and SMART enough to be their leader. Our people have killed off enough of some of the Others easily enough without much reaction from the rest of the Others. But they sure hopped to get 'Henry' out alive. Kinda makes him seem that much more important to them to me.
Any thoughts on the four-toed statue? Eeerie.
I thought I had more to say but I guess I've forgotten. My sister didn't get to watch it but our dad recorded it so we're going up to his house this morning to watch it, so I might have more to say later.
