Remus stormed out of his dormitory without a word to the others, marching directly to the Headmaster's office. He then remembered that he didn't know the password, tried to explain to the gargoyle why he needed to see Dumbledore and, when he was met with resounding silence, sat down at the gargoyle's feet with a huff, resolving to wait

Severus leaned against the wall beside Remus silently, twiddling a cigarette between his fingers.

[howlsoftly]

"What?" He snapped bitterly, staring at the ground.

[young_sev]

"I suppose asking if you're alright would be dreadfully stupid." Severus pocketed the cigarette, still looking at the ground.

[howlsoftly]

"The most helpful thing I can do is to get good grades and... and... just not be an evil maniac," he spat. "You're right, I'm useless."

[young_sev]

"I never said you were useless." Severus hugged himself.

[howlsoftly]

"If I can't help..."

[young_sev]

"You're fifteen years old, Remus."

[howlsoftly]

"I need to do something," he wailed and, out of sheer frustration, stood, whirled, and punched the stone wall quite hard. "Shit!"

Severus stood back, watching him. "Remus..."

Remus staggered against the wall and slid to the floor, clutching his hand and sobbing, "Shit, shit, shit..."

[young_sev]

Severus sank beside him, tentatively wrapping his arms around him. "Remus...shush..."

Remus buried his face in Severus' shoulder, crying pathetically while cradling his broken hand in his lap.

Severus' embrace became more sure, and he began stroking Remus' hair. "Stop crying, love, please," he murmured, not caring if anyone walked by at that moment.

"I don't wanna be useless," Remus hiccoughed. "Need to help... need to do something..."

[young_sev]

"You're not useless, Remus, you're not..." Severus kissed his temple, holding him closer. "You're alive, and when you're older there'll be all kinds of things you can do..."

"And h-how do I know I'll even live that long? m'Supposed to be dead already!"
