CHARACTER NAME: Dr. Eric Foreman
FANDOM: House MD
CANON: 511: Joy to the World
WHAT THEY LOST: Memory of Robert Chase

PERSONALITY: Foreman is an ass. But not in the way that House is an ass. Where House just says whatever’s on his mind without any regard for the person in front of him, Foreman at least knows a bit of tact. However, that doesn’t mean he’ll disguise the fact that he thinks you’re an idiot if he thinks you’re an idiot. He’s arrogant, self-focused, and he’s not above manipulating people to get what he wants-he’s just not blatant about it. He possesses subtlety that House chooses not to use.

He tends to keep his distance from the people he works with, wanting to keep the distinction between colleagues and friends. He is very practical and controlling, which, in the end, makes him what most would consider “boring.” He had a tumultuous childhood, that landed him a juvenile record which he’s still trying to move beyond. Working for House isn’t necessarily helping in that respect, as he’s told Foreman point blank that that’s why he hired him, but he’s almost-made peace with it as well.

He is not, however, completely heartless. Foreman possess a strong moral compass. He’s not willing to push the ethical lines, and he’s always willing to remind House where they are. But he likes working under House, because he’s willing to do what’s necessary to solve the case, rather than worry about the red tape that comes with it. The medicine doesn’t have to be completely safe, or perfect, but if it’s necessary and it works, that’s all that matters, and Foreman likes that simplicity.

THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: The idea that he and House were one in the same annoyed him to no end. Because it wasn’t like he didn’t realize he was picking up on some of House’s-less favorable-characteristics, but he had to in order to deal with the man. Generally speaking, House only responded to what he used himself, and if Foreman had to be nasty to get his point across then, damnit, he was going to do it. He had never had scruples when it came to standing up for himself in the work place and defending anything from the ability to do his job to his record. And if he needed to be an ass to do it, he was going to be an ass.

There was a difference between him and House. Foreman was actually capable of being a human being outside the workplace. He could be the perfect gentleman if he wanted to. He had friends, associates, family. He had had more than one solid romantic relationship in his lifetime. He didn’t resort to hookers because no one loved him. He was a full-fledged, for the most part law-abiding member of society. House, on the other hand, couldn’t get along with anyone if you paid him a million dollars. No, wait. He probably would. But once the money was in his hands, he would automatically revert back to his usual misanthropic who didn’t give a damn what people thought, and was now a million dollars richer. Not that he had anyone to share it with. Not that he would share at all.

Yes, maybe Foreman had his pride. And yes, maybe he could be a first class ass to his co-workers. He was a jerk when he needed to be, and may share certain-personality traits with the man he worked for.

He was still nothing like House.

FIRST-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: It’s not that I enjoy working for House. I don’t. He’s an arrogant, egotistical son of a bitch, and he knows it. But he’s also one of the best doctors in the country, and it’s probably one of the best learning experiences I’ve ever had. I can admit that, without admitting that I like the guy.

I used to be worried about becoming House. By the time the thought actually entered my mind, it was too late, and I already was. I became used to doing things his way-where you made decisions, tough decisions, without caring for ethics or the rules so long as the puzzle was solved and the patient’s life was saved. In the end, the patient’s life was usually saved.

And in the end-that’s what matters.
