character name: Razputin Aquato
canon & medium: Game - Psychonauts
age & species: Human, Age 10
appearance: Picture can be found
here and in the
icons Razputin is a short ten year old human with a very peculiar appearance (which is normal where he comes from.) He has orange tinted skin and short red hair, which is frequently hidden under his headgear. It appears to be an old fashioned pilot’s cap, with red tinted goggles strapped to it. They usually rest atop his head, save for when he’s ‘on a mission’ or training at summer camp. Aside from his headgear, he wears a brown leather jacket with matching pants and gloves. Underneath, he wears a green striped turtleneck shirt. He carries a small pack on his back bearing the merit badges he’s earned at summer camp, something he’s rarely seen without. He has a second outfit bestowed to him by his mentor, Ford Cruller, an official Psychonauts jumpsuit which is a dark green color, save for the small badge sewn into the left side.
timeline: post game
background/history link:
Razputin Aquato was born into a rather large family, one in a very unusual venue of entertainment: the circus. He and his entire family are traveling gypsies who have lived a large part of their life on the move. Raz in particular is an acrobat, his skills on the tightrope and trapeze honed since as early as the time he could walk. Unfortunately, despite the benign profession, the Aquato family has amassed many enemies in its long history, one family in particular known as the Galochios, harbors a fierce grudge. As a result, psychics in that family have cursed the Aquatos to an untimely death. Every man, woman and child bearing their name is cursed to die in water, which is why Raz takes every step to keep away from water more than a few inches deep. Because of the curse he carries, Raz carries a justified fear of water. Any water more than a few inches deep is a threat to him, particularly because a hand formed of water will always try to pull him in. Once it gets a hold of him, he becomes unable to do anything but panic, and even at times becomes paralyzed.
At the age of ten Razputin began to develop strong psychic abilities. Raz’s father, Augustus put him through strict and rigorous acrobatic training in what Raz believed was an effort to divert his attentions away from his psychic abilities (when in reality, his father was simply instilling discipline through physical conditioning to improve his mental prowess). Instead, it only drove his fascination in the psychic arts and he practiced in secret, occasionally abusing it to play tricks on his brothers and sisters in one of their performances.
Luckily (or unluckily), a stranger witnessed what most audience members missed, and handed Raz a pamphlet for a Psychic Summer Camp that trained children with psychic abilities. He becomes enamored with the idea of attending, only to have his father reject the idea, going so far as to forbid it and rip up his pamphlet in front of the entire family. It is that final act that drives Raz to sneak out during the night and steal one of the circus animals (‘The Littlest Pony’) to escape the circus to Whispering Rock.
Game events are detailed
here. personality:
At first glance, Raz is the typical ten year old boy. He is impatient in work, but eager in play. To his companions and fellow campers, he is friendly and approachable. Sometimes his playful streak will show in teasing and minor tricks, but means no harm, if not easily remedied. He has a quirky sense of humor. And often thinks aloud when he's alone (though that particular gem is just a result of the game trying to tell you what you're doing utterly wrong.)
Like most other adolescents, Raz wants to be well liked and fit in with his peers (sometimes a little too much). That includes trying to impress them on a regular basis, touting what he thinks makes him special or worthy of attention. To those he doesn't get along with, Raz isn’t overly confrontational. Given the chance, he's been able to stand up to bullies who were picking on smaller children, though the altercation never turned violent or physical. At worst, said bully just find himself on the receiving end of some smart remarks and insults. Especially since Raz isn’t afraid to speak his mind, even to his idols, Agent Vodello and Agent Nein. Raz does have his limits, however, and if push comes to shove, Raz isn't afraid to get physical.
Lucky for the oddball group of campers at Whispering Rock, Raz has a good head on his shoulders. For all their eccentricity, Raz's family instilled in him a good sense right and wrong, values Raz carries with him throughout his travels. When Raz encounters someone in need, he'll usually end up lending a hand. No payment is necessary, but he certainly won't turn away compensation if it's offered. Being so young, Raz hasn’t seen or experienced many evils in the world (aside from psychic death tanks, but that hasn't tarnished his faith in humanity), so he still has an idealized view of right and wrong. He even feels guilty hurting animals. (Except squirrels. He won’t go out of his way to kill or maim them, but ew. As far as he's concerned, all those things probably have rabies.)
If there's anything that Raz takes very seriously, it's the Psychonauts, a group of international secret agents gifted with psychic powers, trained and dispatched on missions to combat what they have called 'enemies of free thought.' Most of his waking hours leading up to the arrival at Whispering Rock have been spent daydreaming about becoming one. This is evidenced by his determination to sneak into Whispering Rock, and to sneak into as many training courses as possible before his father came to pick him up. He admires the Psychonauts (even if everything he knows are from reading comic books. He’s even read all the True Psychic Tales magazines and even memorized the Whispering Rock opening speech.)
Like most ten year olds, Raz wants to achieve something worthwhile. Despite being so young, he craves higher purpose, even if his notions are simplistic or idealistic, even if others may find his goals lofty or unreachable. Raz takes challenges head on, particularly if the other party questions his capability to carry out the task. Oftentimes, his pride will lead him to overestimate himself, even if a situation may seem too much for him to more experienced minds. In fact, one of the things that serves as a constant source of irritation to Raz is his inability to be taken seriously by any adults. Many of his warnings of looming danger and valid threats have been met with patronizing words and dismissals (save for Ford Cruller, but he's a special case.) It's probably explains why he's set it upon himself to save both the camp (and the world, as he sees it).
abilities:
(All powers that involve using another character’s mind or will to perform will always be used only with the permission of all parties involved.)
As stated by several camp counselors at whispering rock, Raz has strong mental defenses that make his mind hard to ‘break into.’ Unfortunately, that says nothing for his physical abilities. While he certainly has the agility of someone subjected to regular strenuous exercise, Raz is rather small. He is dependent on his powers and his ability to avoid things to keep himself safe. In reality, all it takes is one good hit to knock him off his feet and keep him there.
In addition to his already latent psychic abilities, Raz’s stay at Whispering Rock has allowed him the following abilitiies.
-- Telekinesis - Ability to move objects - depowered to only objects the size of trashcans at most.
-- Levitation - Ability to utilize his thought bubble to do various things, (though ironically levitation isn't one, since he is still very new to his power) It appears as a ball of energy, which he stands on and can travel over flat or easily traversed surfaces by rolling it. While it doesn’t physically augment his speed, it does allow him to jump slightly higher by bouncing on it. If he holds onto the tail of his thought bubble, it can slow him during a fall.
-- Psi Blasts - Ability to harness aggression as physical blasts. It is the psychic equivalent to a punch, except over a longer distance. Depowered through limited use, and must recharge only after a few uses.
-- Invisibility - Raz has the ability to turn invisible- only lasts for a few seconds. Being hit, or running out of energy will reveal him.
-- Shield - For a few seconds, he can guard or reflect physical objects or mental attacks - He can only hold this for a few seconds, and cannot move while the shield is up.
-- Pyrokinesis - Ability to set things on fire. - depowered so he can only generate a small amount of flame.
-- Confusion - Ability to use the confsing aspect of his mind as a physical question mark. Throwing it will cause confusion in the small area where it lands, much like a grenade. Limited to 3 uses and a small area of 3 feet.
-- Clairvoyance - Ability to see things the way other people see them. Depowered to vague feelings or images.
All abilities will revert to level 1 in both power, duration and number of times used.
Raz is also in possession of a Psycho-Portal that allows Raz to dive into a person’s mind. Utilization of this small tiny door involves placing it on the person’s forehead and sending an astral projection into their mindscape to explore. For the purposes of the RP, the Psycho portal will be depowered so that it must be voluntary and extremely taxing for anything to occur at all. People will easily block Raz or throw him out. Better yet, nothing will happen at all, someone will have a tiny door on their head looking unimpressed and Raz... will just look like an idiot. Or rude. Besides that, Raz also has a moral code regarding its use and will not abuse it unless it’s ‘for the good of the mission’ or ‘for the good of the person.'
any plans for your character here?
’Raz is ten years old, and understandably has quite a lot of growing up to do. I think throwing him into a journey like this with such a wide cast of characters will give him a lot of valuable insight into growing up. But… he’s also ten years old so it’s also a chance for him to have a real childhood and to enjoy himself, instead of being thrown so quickly into trying to save the world and live such a pressured life as a performer.

Hey! What is this place? Milla? Sasha? Lili! Where are you guys?
Listen. If anybody is out there, my name is Razputin and I’m looking for my friends. We were together on a mission. A very important mission. With the Psychonauts! But can’t do that if I’m here. Wherever here is.
Hello? Is this thing broken?
[There’s an obnoxious tapping noise, muffled, like a gloved finger poking the screen. Then, there’s a pause, and a sigh, as if he’s finally taking in his surroundings and situation in earnest.]
Oh man, now what am I supposed to do?
[Then quietly to himself.] People don’t just fall out jets, right? … Maybe I pressed the eject button… Do jets even have -

third-person sample:
Crud. Looked like he was in for another lecture from Dad after the crowd cleared.
That deadpan look his father shot across the stage was 'Dad-speak' for ‘young man, we are going to have a nice, long talk after the show is over’.
Well... Whatever. Nothing new, right? He just hoped it wouldn’t take too long. After all, the grounds would only be open for another hour before they closed for the night. (And to be completely honest? So worth it. His sister had been mouthing off behind stage, and even making faces at him across the way, perfect grounds for retaliation. Besides, the performance was totally routine for them, what was one small psychic shove. She recovered just fine didn’t she?)
As Razputin drew the canvas aside and left the tent, he surveyed the grounds. The weather was moderately warm, a welcome change from the usual sweltering summer weather that they often had to perform in. Not to mention the night had dulled the heat to a comfortable temperature, one perfect for exploring as the last of the straggling customers left. Maybe even get some sweets in while Ma wasn’t looking.
His walk was halted as a tall figure whose face was backlit by the firelight approached him, stepping directly into his path. Usually this wouldn’t bother Razputin. He and his family were often stopped and chatted with, especially after a performance. This time, however, something felt strangely… off. Trenchcoat, obscuring hat, curling mustache - everything about this man was highly suspicious, something that had Raz frowning at the start.
“Hello there, little boy.”
“Sorry, whatever it is, not interested.” He’s ten years old, not stupid.
“Oh, but this… I assure you… is something that might just peak your interest. Just give it a read. You won’t regret it. I promise.”
Razputin’s first move is to spare glances in several other directions, some to see if others were witnessing this at all, and another instinctively checking on the whereabouts of his family, who were only now departing from the tent with faces relieved that the last performance went as planned.
It’s easy to say no and Raz tries to hand it back with thinly veiled skepticism in his voice, “Look. Thanks but no thanks, I - “
But it’s not so easy to return it, especially after the stranger suddenly disappeared. Leaving Raz was. By himself. Holding the pamphlet. In the firelight. Ookkay. That wasn’t creepy at all.
Still, he can’t help but look over the cover.
‘Whispering Rock Summer Camp,’ huh? It’s probably just selling something. He’d probably do better to just throw the stupid thing away. If his dad knew he was thinking more about all this ‘psychic stuff,’ he’d be in for an even longer talking to than he already was. Most of his comics were already on the verge of being thrown away, even if he had the entire collection of True Psychic Tales from the first issue and they were all in mint condition was his dad crazy!? He really should just throw it away. And forget about this stuff.
He pauses as both performers and audience members shuffle past, eyes on the paper, thumb tapping the cover thoughtfully.
Quietly, he folds it up and slips it in his pack when his father isn’t looking.
