The effect on the first picture looks like it could have been done a number of different ways - will have to spend a lot of time looking into this, but I'll find an answer for you if it kills me! It could be a brush on a blank layer over this image layer with the opacity settings reduced, it could be a plug-in filter, it could be a pattern overlay with the opacity tweaked, lots of different things. Experiment and let me know what you come up with in the meantime.

The effect on the text, where you clip an image into the type, is called a clipping group, which is extremely easy. I'll post that as my next tutorial and credit you with it, okay? Will get back with you on the other thing ASAP...

hi, first i wanted to say thanks for this community or esle i'd be lost
second i have a question there is an effect you can do in photoshop where it causes the picture to look as if it have little crosses or x's over it [ http://www.livejournal.com/users/tv_glare/ <--- on their background is an exmaple ] and i was told this is called color reducing and i tried but couldn't figure out how to get that effect if possible could you tell me or direct me to a link where that information is given. thanks so much.
