There's a lot to tell about yesterday. I don't know if I can be bothered to go into much detail, though. Bollocks, I'll just start writing and see where it goes.
I pissed around in the morning, went into town around 1:30pm to get something to eat. And then I went to King's Cross! I met James before too long, and we made our way to Burger King. You know, we really need to start eating at more upmarket places, man. What would people think if they knew that Don't Eat Sky eat at Burger King and McDonalds? They wouldn't buy our shitting albums, that's for sure.
Er, anyway, we got a taxi to the Carling Academy after that, and milled around in HMV and Borders. The latter had a decent selection of manga (And a disgusting disabled toilet), and the former was a bit shit. At a little before 7pm we went back to the venue, and were escorted through a side entrance, up a service lift and into the mezzanine area upstairs. At first we were expected to sit away in the corner like a pair of retards, but we positioned ourselves in the middle of the rail overlooking the stage, and promptly held that position all night.
The gig was great. I guess I knew he was going to play with a full band, but I didn't think it would sound as good as it did. An awesome drummer, excellent saxophonist, guitarist and keyboard player, and of course Bonobo on bass. It was practically a jazz ensemble, and there was a lot of improvisation. And.. er, I don't know what else to say about the performance. I don't really know the titles of any of the guy's songs that well, which sort of hampers my ability to discuss them. James and I were both disappointed at the absence of Recurring, but that was about the only downer. Oh, apart from the guy standing next to me who kept rubbing his arse against me, and making stupid rave-y hand gestures. I would have bottled him, had the bottles not been made of plastic*.
My journey home was an eventful one, and probably deserves an entry of its own. I think I'll do that tomorrow.
Before then, here are a few things I bought today:
- Miho Hatori's new solo album, Ecdysis. It's been out in Japan for some time, and I was going to get it from CDJapan, but I found it was released over here on Monday, so I had a look for it in HMV, just on the off-chance that they had it. And they did! I'll say it again, Guildford's HMV is surprisingly good. It's a little early to comment on the album, perhaps, but it seems really nice. Her lyrics are strange and inspiring, although the tracks are a little more low-key than her Cibo Matto stuff.
- Two games. Namely, Need For Speed: Underground 2, and Splinter Cell 3: Chaos Theory. Before you hit/throw sharp objects at me, I got them both for £7.50 in a 'buy one get one free offer' at GAME. I never particularly liked the first NFS:U, but it allows me to fulfill my car-tuning needs without wearing a tracksuit and a Burberry hat and not being able to speak English properly. As for Splinter Cell 3... well, it's got a soundtrack by Amon Tobin. It doesn't look awful, either, but considering I'm still not finished with We Love Katamari, and I have Phantom Brave and Silent Hill 4 still to play, it's pretty low on my to-play list.
Oh, I've arranged to have a look at four houses tomorrow. I hope they'll be good, because I've got until Friday to find a place and move in. Man, it's going to be tight. Anyway, I'm done now. I might upload photos of the gig tomorrow.
*Idiots please note, this is a joke. I would not have bottled him, plastic or otherwise.
