Papercutting (aka: My new obsession)

Feb 29, 2012 15:16

Papercutting basically involves cutting intricate designs out of paper, usually with a craft knife ('X-acto' knife to any Yankees out there). Basically:

The Japanese call their version Kirigami; the Germans have Scherenshnitte (bless-you!); the Mexicans have papel picado... there's a tonne of amazing paper artists out there - and a few hanging around LJ, too!

I've really started to get into the craft, ever since I did that Christmas Wreath two months back. It's a lot more fun and less tedious than I thought it would be - the most frustrating part for me is actually designing the image rather than cutting it...

Assassin's Creed
Morti di Vivo!

Info:
The first 'serious' papercut I did, and it took a ridiculous amount of time to finish. It's based on the Wanted poster seen in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.
White Paper, A4, 80 gsm. ~6 hrs.

This one is dear to my heart. I'm a chemist and currently out of a job, so this is kind of a motivational piece for me. I took the main image from a Russian Textbook (thanks Tumblr!) and put a few of my own twists on it (the text, mainly).
Black Paper, A4, 120 gsm. ~6 hrs.

Stargate Atlantis
"Ladies and gentlemen... welcome to Atlantis."
(aka: "How do you get your hair to go like that?")

First fandom papercut! I put together the image from various screencaps (thanks Gateworld!), converted it to grayscale, and went from there. Love the way the Daedulus turned out, and also the Sheppard panel at the top of the wheel. Cut the S's on 'Stargate Atlantis' back to front and had to stickytape a fix in, though hopefully it's not too noticeable. Never cutting small faces again - luckily most of the characters have pretty distinctive hair. The triangles on the Stargate just about killed me. Oh... and don't look at the Gate symbols too closely either...

The plan is to do a whole series based on my favourite fandoms - Dr Who, Sherlock, Merlin, etc... I have a lot of time on my hands while I wait for a job offer (fingers crossed, wish me luck!) and practice makes perfect - so I'm all up for suggestions and requests!
Comments are love!
