Thank you for loving me all the same, and for keeping the tone of your answer so kind! I am so lucky in this comm, everyone's always extra polite to me. I think we're each concntrating on different aspects, possibly because of different backgrounds (and, in my case, because of having been mentally ill myself). To me, House's self-surgery is final proof of mental illness. It's attempted suicide, period. He should not have been let out AMA but kept in suicide watch (and certainly shouldn't have had free access to opiates while hospitalized!). High as a kite comes in many shapes and sizes. If you get high because you are home when you should be in hospital, in my book it's not your fault but the hospital's. In fact, I think the treatment of House's pain management has been pathetic all through the series, and went steadily worse.
When some years ago in my home town a woman with serious mental problems managed to buy a gun and kill her family, she was sent to a mental hospital. The people who screwed up so that she got access to a gun (yes, in Italy law requires serious assessment before you buy a gun legally) lost their job and the insurance of the shooting club that had admitted her paid damage. Luckily for her, she had been certified mentally ill and dangerous before she even applied to the shooting club - and they would have found out had they done the controls they were legally supposed to do. I think House at the end of Season 7 was onviously in need of medical help, and no one gave him any. Sometime, when you really really love someone, they may need to be committed against their wish. Like in 'A beautiful mind' (the book, not the film).
You may be right, though, what would the fans have said? I keep forgetting that this isn't RL, just a TV show. One which used to be great, and is now going down the drain, kept together only by some awesome actors.
