chapter 2 part 1

Kat woke the next morning and groaned. She got wearily out of bed and bathed. She then dressed feeling better than before. She made herself a strong cup of coffee and went for a run in the early morning light. Feeling much better now that she had exercised and she returned to her rooms feeling good about herself. She hurriedly changed in to appropriate clothes for the day ahead and walked down to breakfast alone. She was the first person there and everyone else sort of trickled in which annoyed her they couldn’t start the meal till all the boys were there and the blessing from the gods were given. Finally all the levellers were seated after standing and bowing to her then she stood.
“Now many of you know me so I won’t bother going through every one of my titles it’s a waste of time.” The boys and girls laughed nervously. “On the subject of time though I want every one of you here on time to every meal when the bell goes you have five minute to be here or I will punish you! I will not tolerate tardiness if you late to a battle a) you miss out on most of the fun. But b) you kill people, if your regiment or group isn’t there, it could be the difference between a win or a loss, so be on time.” The levellers looked at each other not sure of what to make of their new mistress.
“Oh and you will address me as Kat or Katrine I can’t cope with Miss or Your Lady, I will throttle someone!” The boys just looked at each other. This was going to be one interesting year.
Kat said the blessing and sat down. Katra who was next to her leaned over and said “You have just made a huge impact on the levellers. They are going to be so unsure of themselves. Thank the Gods for you Kat some of them have been riding their high horses for to long and they are all just a little cheeky. They are gonna wish they never underestimated you just cause you’re a lady!”
“I sure hope they do underestimate me because I will show them why I’m the best there is.”
Katra and Alex on her other side who had been listening laughed uproariously. They Levellers looked up uncertain she smiled at them and they resumed eating.
“When do lessons start?”
“Nine, every leaves breakfast whenever they want they get free time if they leave early enough but they all know that. I handed out timetables this morning. After lunch is the physical as usual but today you are deciding what we do normally its just riding and getting used to the routine again but you may want to do differently Monday is your day to do what you like with them. They are gonna think it will be soft and easy today except for a few teachers like myself who think that learning starts from they moment they step into my classroom to the moment they leave.”
Kat laughed “Don’t I know it but then I was one of your favourites and you let me of easy I think.”
Katra laughed and admitted “It’s true you and your friends were one of my favourites. But that was because you were eager to learn and you were worth talking to!”
Alex and Kat laughed.
Kat got up and everyone looked up in surprise “I need coffee so I’m going to ask the kitchens for a cup” Alex grinned as Kat walked away.
“What do you reckon Katra? Will she do?”
“Oh yes she will be great I have a lot of faith in her she will be all the levellers friend but she will always keep the line of respect drawn.”
Kat wandered back talking to few levellers she recognised, some of them her relations like cousins and some of them siblings of friends of hers. She returned to the head table happily a mug of steaming coffee in her hand.
“Kat you have a class first up” Katra warned “Do you know what you’re teaching?”
Kay sat up “NO I had no idea I was teaching; William didn’t say anything about it!”
Katra sighed “I bet he forgot you’re teaching tactics and strategies, basic battle stuff.”
“Oh right easy any texts that are set or anything?”
“Nope you do that so think about it. Here’s a copy of your timetable and a handy diary so you’re organised; as I know all too well what you’re like!”
Kat laughed and stood up “I had better go and raid my book collection and Gorathian’s for the moment and I will gather more texts from elsewhere later.”
“Fair enough I’ll see you at lunch”
Kat nodded and left conscious of being the first person to leave and being the Headknight she was attracting attention.
She walked up to the mages tower right up to the top floor. Gorathian had the whole top floor being the respected and powerful person he was. Kat thought this was an overstatement. She marched straight up the spiral stairs after giving the password (Redfire) to a portrait of Leana covering his entrance way. He answered the door irritably. She had woken him up. He wasn’t an early riser. His short beard was tangled and his long hair was even worse. She walked straight past him to his bookshelves and was pulling off titles when he finally moved from where he was holding the door open in surprise.
“Umm may I ask what you are doing raiding my bookshelves at this time if you were that desperate for something to read you could have at least come at a decent hour! And aren’t you starting work now?”
“Yes I am and this is a decent hour I’ve been awake for hours, my first class is now and I need books I’m teaching battle guide and my library isn’t as extensive as yours. If I wanted something to read I would have gone to the library as I have already read yours unless you bought a few new ones in my absence?”
“Yes I have and one is on battles its that red one with the gold writing on the end.”
Kat grabbed it. Gorathian sighed, sat in his favourite chair and rubbed his eyes. Kat smiled at him and stacked the books she had grabbed and said “I’ll come back later and pick more but these will do for now! Are you up for chess sometime?”
“Of course we need to start the competition again. Do you want to make Thursday our night?”
“Sounds good, see you later.”
“Bye good-luck”
“Thanks Grandfather, Are you teaching?”
“Yeah but my class is the last one before lunch so I’m going to catch a bit more sleep then I’m going to see the twins!”
“Ok say hi to them for me I’ve got to run, bye” Kat picked up the books and ran out leaving the door open. Gorathian sighed and got up to close it, he then wandered back to bed muttering about energetic youths.
Kat ran down the stairs to her first class and skidded outside just as the bell rang. Her books flew out of her arms she sighed and waved her hand so they all sailed back into her arms. She marched through the door and dumped them on her desk. The she turned to face her new class of Greens filing in. They all were silent as they found desks and stood behind them all looking at each other unsure.
Kat smiled at them “Sit down please.” They all sat. “Now I am Katrine of Tallen as you all know so I won’t bother going over it. Now I’m here to teach you the battle skills of the mind. These are the most important thing you could ever know!” She noticed a raised hand “Yes you there I don’t know names yet so say your name then ask your question.” She nodded at them and they nodded back. She then nodded at the dark boy with his hand up.
“Sirius and Lady, oops sorry Kat, this going to take some getting used to!” The whole class nodded empathically. “How are the skills of the mind the most important part of the battle? Isn’t fighting it better?” He asked interested, she could see she was going to like this boy. She nodded “Yes fighting it is important very important don’t get me wrong but do you know where to go to fight? Who you’re fighting with? How you’re going to fight? Why they are you enemy? What is your terrain like? What advantages do you have? These are just a few of the questions you may have to answer if you’re a commander of a post.”
The boys all smiled (there were no girls in that level apparently) and nodded understanding why the subject was important.
Kat smiled “Let me guess you had a boring teacher before and you didn’t pay attention.” The boys all looked guilty. Kat laughed surprising them “You know what? I have one lesson for all of you. When I was a leveller and even now I had three best friends and we had a motto “if miss out on info you will miss a life” so remember this if you don’t understand something or you missed class see a teacher or me and ask for help. If the subject if boring, go and see someone. Don’t feel ashamed of asking for help. Help is something that should always be given willingly and be taken with gratitude.” The boys smiled at her and she at them.
“Now does anyone have questions about anything I’m not going to grind you over books today because I’m not sure of what we will be studying? I only got back 2 days ago and I haven’t had time to make a lesson plan. But that is not to say I’m soft I will be working you hard this afternoon.” The boys groaned. “Any questions about me? Or on anything else?”
They all put their hands up. Kat spent the rest of the lesson answering questions about herself and her time as a leveller and various other subjects.

Kat sank into an armchair in her rooms that first lesson was her only lesson that day till the afternoon so she had two hours to herself before lunch. She decided to head down to see Starfire and practice tilting. She was walking down to the stables when an arm slid around her waist. She turned startled to see Alex smiling at her. He used this close proximity as a chance to kiss her. She kissed him back quickly then broke the kiss.
“We can’t be to obvious Alex, people will talk and I really don’t need that right now.”
Alex nodded soberly “Your right.”
He didn’t drop his hand from her waist though and she didn’t mind, it just looked like friendly gesture to any one else.
“Where are you headed?” Alex asked.
“To the stables I’m gonna to tilt you want to join me?” Kat asked knowing he loved to tilt.
“Yeah sure why not I have no class’s today Hat and Rals might be down there.”
She nodded “This going to be fun” Kat grinned evilly.
“I’m concerned by that smile now you haven’t smiled like that since you charmed Gorathian’s clothes and hair to change every 15 minutes! My ears are still ringing from his screams and that was six years ago!” Alex said reminiscently.
Kat laughed “I remember that it was so much fun!” She laughed.
“Yeah for you; I was terrified for my life!’ Alex retorted. Kat grinned and they walked the rest of the way bantering back and forth. When they reached the stables they met Rals who explained Hatria was with the King. The three friends saddled up and were at the quintain in less than half an hour. Kat selected a lance from the edge of the field and positioned herself ready to go at Alex’s word.
“Go” Kat urged Starfire into a charge and they thundered towards the quintain with they hit squarely in the dead middle and thundered past easily avoiding the sandbag. Alex and Rals clapped enthusiastically and whistled like children. Kat grinned foolishly.
“Alright, Alex, your turn.” Alex nodded and started to charge all of a sudden just before he hit it. It moved a little further down the field Alex shook his head and continued the charge then it happened again. He followed this for another two times until he worked it out. He wheeled Gold around cantered back to his two friends who were laughing so hard they had stitches. Alex sat there glaring at them; this made them laugh even harder. Finally Kat choked out “The look on your face… Priceless” This sent them off again. Alex waited patiently, the whole group knew what it was like to be on the butt of her jokes and he had to admit even when they were the butt it was pretty funny. Suddenly he noticed some new Red levellers they must have been at the stables choosing their horses. They looked at the three adults as though they were crazy. This made him laugh. Kat and Rals looked up at this and he laughingly pointed his finger at the levellers. Kat and Rals quickly turned and looked. They to were soon laughing. After a minute of two Kat had calmed down enough to canter over to the fence. The three male red levellers drew back, nervous. Kat smiled, she really had a beautiful smile Alex thought smiling. The Reds looked slightly reassured by that smile. Kat had a talent for that. She only had to smile or do something to instantly reassure someone. The Reds moved closer as Kat swung off Starfire. “Hey I’m your training master if you don’t already know!” They nodded still nervous. Kat’s grin faded a little “So did you just choose you horses?” They nodded excitedly. She smiled “I remember when I first came we had to bring our own and my mother gave me a stallion of one of the herds. This is him, his name is Starfire.”
The boys gasped, impressed. She smiled and asked them questions getting to know them. They stood chatting for a few minutes then the stable master Robert came out with about ten other Reds and the boys had to leave. Kat swung up onto Starfire and trotted back to her friends. Suddenly the bell tolled and for the end of the morning. Kat groaned, “We’re supposed to be at lunch.” The boys groaned too knowing that they shouldn’t be late and they hadn’t unsaddled their horses yet. Then Kat had an idea “Say how bout we do the ride trick old master Trak did to us?”
“You mean we ride into the dining room and have a bit of fun?” Alex asked suspiciously
“Yep!”
“Are you serious?”
“Yep”
“This could be fun”
“I knew it; I would get you on my side!
Alex groaned and Rals rolled his eyes. Kat just laughed and wheeled Starfire around and galloped towards the fence. The boys groaned again as she sailed over the fence as if it was nothing but a pole on the ground instead of a four foot high fence.
“Well, now, you’re just showing off!” Rals yelled and Kat laughed and shouted back “Race you!” the boys groaned a third time and kicked their horses into a gallop and race out of the gate, gaining ground to where Kat was standing cockily. As they came abreast Starfire surged forward and the three horses raced up the grass and clattered into the courtyard. They were forced to slow here. The horses trotted up the corridor straight ahead just as a cleaner came out shouting. The three adults laughed and took a left turn and halted just outside the door to the dining room. Kat flicked a hand and it opened with a bang startling all within. The horses surged forward abreast of each other. The rider unsheathed their swords and galloped around the hall showing their prowess with the weapon. The crowd got over their shock and were soon cheering and urging them to do more. Kat nodded to the boys and they nodded in return the teachers suddenly looked nervous most knew what these three were capable of! The three whooped and laughing, throwing insults back and forth. Thanks to Kat their weapons were guarded so surrounding the edge was a sort of force field not letting the blades touch. Kat then got out her bow and showed off her prowess with her weapon of choice. She shot arrows standing on Starfire’s back, she enchanted them to follow Rals or Alex. Who looked a little nervous for a while until they realised the arrows would never hit. She then rode close to a table and snatched up a couple of apples and handed them to Alex who threw them at a wall, the apples never reached the wall they fell to the floor with arrows in the exact middle. The levellers gasped and clapped this girl had talent and the instructors sat there awed. Suddenly Katra go up and yelled “Hey Kat I haven’t yet tested your talent with daggers yet and I need to know you haven’t become a pushover in my excellent training absence!”
Kat laughed and yelled to him “You wish, Katra, what’s your challenge?”
“Same old same old you throw at the red dot while avoiding the blunts I throw but your going to have to get off that wretched animal of yours”
“For that comment I’m not sure I will; Starfire’s insulted and I hope you’re memory hasn’t become that poor that you forgot the last time he was insulted.”
“I apologise Starfire, Come on Kat we haven’t all day these levellers need to do something!”
Kat swung off Starfire and tossed the reins to Alex, she then turned to the crowd
“Ok now that we have had bit of fun I’m going to start your teaching here and now. Katra and I have been doing this for a long time; so don’t be scared and you may scoff”” She nodded to boys who had looked away in scorn “but it gets pretty hairy I will put up force fields but please don’t cross them.” Everyone in presence nodded and stepped back leaving a large space in the middle of the hall.(the tables were all around the edge of the hall.)
Kat turned and nodded to Katra who pulled out his returning daggers as Kat did the same. Suddenly they threw without warning, two three daggers at a time, Katra and Kat twisted and dodge escaping the weapons easily. The crowd gasped as Kat bent over backwards to avoid two daggers one underneath her and one on top. Katra smiled and easily side stepped a dagger from Kat. The dance continued for another 5 minutes then Kat held up her hand and all flying daggers halted and dropped to the floor. Katra looked disappointed, Kat looked at him severely and said “Ok we have had our fun now it time to see if Trak lost his touch and test the newies.”
Katra laughed knowing as well as Kat that there was no way Trak had lost his touch. They boys cheered and started to troop out. Kat smiled and accepted Starfire’s reins.
Suddenly she groaned and looked for a way to escape. The Ring had suddenly appeared, Gorathian in the lead.
“What were you thinking?”
Kat winced as Gorathian’s bellow’s reached her ears.
“Well I was having fun and also why the hell do you care?” Kat snapped back waspishly.
“You have talent but you waste it! Sorcery and battle skills. If your mother was here…”
“Well she’s not Grandfather is she? And she would understand more than you! So would Grandmother!” Kat yelled snapping “I was doing something mum and Trak did to impress on us what we could achieve and amazingly enough it worked I’m not as good, I never will be but at least I can try!”
“No Kat you not as good…” Kathrand broke in “Your better and I know what you were doing even if he didn’t.”
Kat smiled at her warmly and then her steely eyes snapped back to her grandfather who winced and said “Fine, I’m sorry but I want to see you in my tower at midnight on the dot I have something to show you.”
Kat nodded and wondered at the change of her Grandfather. He generally never gave up on a fight so quickly although the Ring rarely interfered with their fight’s maybe that was why.
That afternoon Kat taught the levellers the finer points of riding and gave them a different perspective on training. She finished hot and sweaty but well pleased with the efforts of the levellers. She unsaddled and washed Starfire down. She refused to make a groom do that sort of work, unless they were in the middle of a battle and she was to busy to do it; when she saw a boy handing is mount over to the groom she had severely reprimanded him and the levellers had soon learnt that she meant business
