Friday: a funny thing happened at the office... pointless Friday evening waffle

1.  When I first started using the internet I looked up my name in what was then the equivalent of Google (Alta Vista, perhaps? I seem to have dumped some trillions of memory cells since then) and found a website run by a woman with exactly the same name. She writes boring soft porn short stories (!) and sells them to magazines, as well as ( Read more... )

Heh heh. The Secret Second Life on LJ ;). I know that feeling (although I sometimes feel like RL is my not-so-secret-but-a-lot-more-boring second life ;) ).

I realised that I wouldn't want colleagues from work stumbling across my LJ and realising who I amBasically, I feel the same. Or not. I'm not really sure about this. There's this community thingie on the internet, called StudiVZ. It's a site for students where you can register, design your own personal info page and join discussion groups etc. Almost everybody at my uni is registered there. I've got an account too. The discussion groups I'm a member of are "FF Fanfiction", "Hi, I'm a Slasher" and "Support Group for Fanfic Writers". I also have the link to my LJ on my profile page. Not putting these things on there would have felt like cheating to me - it wouldn't have been, but it would have felt like it. Still, I'm always embarrassed when people in uni walk up to me and tell me, "Hey, I checked out your StudiVZ page. What's a Slasher ( ... )

I'm beginning to develop that feeling too. It's a little disturbing :)

StudiVZ

Coincidentally, someone mentioned something similar to me at work today. He has two children, both students, and they're members of something like that. (I can't remember the name, though. Bookface, or something?) He doesn't 'get' that sort of internet thing. Being a member of LJ, I do :)

Still, I'm always embarrassed when people in uni walk up to me and tell me, "Hey, I checked out your StudiVZ page. What's a Slasher?" ;)LOL! I know exactly what you mean. I've attempted to explain the concept to a couple of pals, and they clearly have absolutely no idea where I'm coming from. I would also have thought it weird until I stumbled into House/Wilson. House/Wilson is the only slash I've ever read. When I first started reading Housefics (the only fandom I've ever read) I went for the gen or pre-slash and assumed I wouldn't enjoy the slash. When I gave it a whirl, though ( ... )

So many people don't. I feel sorry for them ;).

Heh heh. Trying to explain to friends what it is you do in front of the computer all day is fun. Well, all my really close friends know me since before my fandom days, and they witness my fannish-ism develop itself, so they have a lot more insight. Actually, I have managed to interest two of them in fanfic - on a purely intellectual level, because one of them is a guy, and there's just not enough fanfic for guys out there ;), and the other one hasn't even watched the X-Files ;). She's always very happy when I provide her with funny fics that you don't need any canon-knowledge for, though. And they both don't mind me rambilng about my life on LJ, as long as I keep it more or less interesting ;).

I forget, sometimes, how narrow-minded most people actually are when it's time to leave the computerThat's something I find really disturbing. Hearing people making homophobic comments in ( ... )

I do too! Many people have no idea at all what they're missing out on :)

one of them is a guy, and there's just not enough fanfic for guys out there

When I first came to LJ, I imagined that there would be a fair few blokes reading/posting on House_Wilson, but as far as I can tell the only one is simple_man

Hearing people making homophobic comments in public completely freaks me, because I'm just not used to it anymore. For me, it's like hearing an anti-semitic comment.

Same here. I flinch at those sorts of comments these days.

There is nothing on my journal that he either doesn't know or would be shocked by but it still felt weird and I'm not sure why. *g* It seems to me that most people don't 'get it' on a whole range of levels. Even before you get to the slash issue, there's the enormous hurdle of reading/writing stories about fictional characters :) I don't expect most of my pals to understand. They simply live in a different universe. Actually, and thinking about it for a moment, most of them aren't actually pals. They're simply people I work with ( ... )
