Jack had been hoping, really, when the whole Deck 'Magic' thing had been explained to him, to test the idea that he could go anywhere in order to be home with his son Christmas Day. That, of course, was not completely out of the question as he grunted a little while walking through the light dusting of snow on the Deck grounds. He'd have to, he supposed, settle for a phone call and hope that the people around were not so paranoid as to listen in to every conversation that took place on cellphones in the deck.
But thus far he wasn't convinced people here weren't paranoid enough to do just that.
Frowning a little, he lifted his cellphone in what looked like a natural move to check the time, and snapped another picture as he did ever so often. Eventually he'd have pictures of enough of the 'landmarks' and people in the city that they could do decent background checks on things- but not yet. First they needed to assimilate into the culture.
Which was like assimilating in a bad trip down the rabbit hole- minus the mad Queen of Hearts, though. Ah, well.
Though, in the mist of collecting names in his notebook, Jack had made some interesting notes- Elisha Kagan, King of Clubs- for one. Not many times you could claim to live under the same roof as one of the richer men in the world. Then there was Hadyn Novak, who had been born in the Deck- thus far his name had never turned up 'outside'. And Victor Fox, who was a Spade but the apparent 'ambassador' to the Clubs- his name had been all over Ramsey's files. As had his picture. Julien...who apparently had no surname was also on his list of people. With luck, Di would get a glass they could lift finger prints off it.
Which, admitted, this wasn't the most 'textbook' investigation- but really. What the hell were they going to do? None of them actually had the authority to arrest anyone, and honestly- when did counter-intelligence play by rule books?
