[ota] come what may...

Long days made for long night, lately. For Clive it was at least in part from pacing in his office, restlessly tapping fingers against his desk and working through what he had of David's paper work to work through. And then there was Amy. Despite the best advice aimed at him, he worried about her. That night was not spoken of, but he couldn't very ( Read more... )

Tess had spent all day out in the fields and the muck worming sheep. She wants nothing so much now as to get warm, drink hot buttered rum and forget the aroma of sheep dung.

She looks up when the door swings open to usher in another escapee from the cold. She smiles when she sees Clive. He looks like he needs a drink more than she does. Stuff going on with the Spades as usual, disappearing Kings, ghosts rising from the dead, hounds of hell...or maybe just a bad day. Deck brats of an age, they're all familiar with each other to one extent or another, so it's simple enough to wave a hello.

"Escaping the looney bin? I have it on good authority no one ever looks in the pubs. Afraid of what they might find."

"Oh I don't think there is such a thing as escaping really." He said with a mild smile as he found a spot on the bar to lean. "But if there was a place to try- the pub is as good as any."

He ordered his drink, picking at the cuffs of his shirt a little before looking back at Tess curiously. "And yourself? What brings you here?"

"Spoken like someone lacking 12 brothers and sisters and all their kith and kin." She'd spent the bulk of her day in a muddy field arm-deep up a cow's backside trying to turn twin calves. Just being in the same vicinity as a Spade or a Diamond made her feel like she should sneak round to the servant's entrance.

"Busy day," is all she says. "I wouldn't want to put you off your dinner by going into gory detail."

"Oh, I do not envy you that. Granted, my one sister is probably more than I can handle at times." He said in jest, laughing a little.

Pressing a hand to his chest he shook his head a little. "Oh, sweet lady, I do thank you for sparing me details. That might well be more than I could handle in a day."

Prettily said and her with her princess tiara back at her palace. "Handle? With our lot it's more a matter of earplugs and learning to endure." She laughs. "I jest. They're a great bunch, but mum's been on one of her matchmaking kicks. Best to avoid her until that dies down.

"And mother and son--and daughter--are all doing well. What about your day?"

"I will make it a point to hide should I see your mother coming my way. And perhaps hide my mother as well, least she get ideas." Which Julie was, unfortunately, prone to. Sometimes she was more like her family than she liked to admit.

"My day...my day has been tiresome." With the David thing to think about. "Thus I am here. Funny how that works."

"Was there ever a mother born who doesn't get ideas?" She catches the bartender's eye when he returns with Clive's drink. "Put it on my tab."

David had wandered off Deck and left no word behind. That or been abducted by Aliens or the Arcana. Her favorite rumor was where he'd gone mad and Katya had ordered him walled up inside a tower room. Any way you looked at it, the king had pulled a runner and other Cards, including Jacks, had been left pulling up the slack.

"Wouldn't be surprised if you told me your work load's doubled. All things considered, I have the best of it. My clients don't talk back." Well, not in English at any rate.

"Clients that take instructions silently are a true blessing indeed. I greatly wish I had them." He said, shaking his head.

"And thank you for the drink, you're a blessing in disguise."
