It's funny, how momentous news always travels in packs. Since Ceiro's resigning, there hadn't been anything to dull her growing optimism. In the space of three days, though, she can pretty honestly say her life has changed.
First, the phone call. Isaac, Urania, and the Spades Butler have left to the Outside to see a doctor. A specialized doctor. For Isaac. She's known his health was deteriorating, but she'd had hope, at least. Now, though, the situation seems dire. Isaac? Going outside? A couple months earlier, she would've deemed it impossible. The question now is what she's supposed to do about it. There's a job to be done at home - a new King must be chosen - but it's Isaac in the hospital.
Of course, a few days later, she's made a decision. It's clear to her that she has to join him, find him, be there for him. So as soon as she wakes up, she rolls out of bed. A quick cold shower wakes her up properly, and she pulls out a large suitcase, starting to pack for a trip. She'll ask Wren and Jordan to hold down the fort for her as long as she's gone, and she trusts that the Deck won't explode while she's gone. She's so focused on quickly putting away her things that she almost doesn't notice the courier standing at her door.
Blythe can't say she isn't irritated as the messenger pulls her away from her room, takes her to see Judith. Her best friend is hurt, in a hospital, possibly dying. She has to see him. In fact, she almost speaks first once she's in front of the Queen, almost cuts over her to request a vacation. But Blythe knows she has to remain polite, professional, wait for Judith to finish speaking before asking for a break.
What Judith says, though, leaves her feeling like someone punched her in the stomach. Wren is gone, resigned - someone in her family has fallen sick back in London and she needs to be there. And her last decision before her hurried departure is to pass her title down to Blythe.
She barely remembers thanking the Queen, bowing before leaving her quarters. She barely remembers coming back to her room, sitting down on her bed next to her over-large, half-packed suitcase. The Suit needs her now, more than anything. With half the Face Cards gone, with the Queen preoccupied with her child, the Suit needs a leader. Blythe can't imagine for a second why Wren thought she'd be the right person for the job. But she can't discuss it with her now, can't convince her to choose someone else.
Unpacking takes some time. It's something to occupy herself, so that she doesn't get caught up in the anxiety of the news. When everything's put away, though, it hits her. Hard.
Blythe Merrick, Ace of Hearts, with a dying friend she can't see. She can't help collapsing at her desk, hyperventilating with the effort of trying not to cry. Of course, in this state of mind, she doesn't exactly remember to lock her door.
