Someday, thinks Sophie, she'll learn not to talk to herself. If she never talked to herself, she never would have spoken to the Fool in town, never would have mentioned the dratted Mary Poppins movie, never would have taken him to an electronics store to purchase a television so he could watch said movie. But it's not her bad habit that's put her

This was going to be great! Christophe dashed off as soon as he knew, skidding around a corner and coming to a stop right in front of her.
"I think I'm almost done!"

"I've brought you some more books," she tells him. Her brows arch. "Done? Did you figure out the wiring then?"

"Why don't you show me?"

Which is why, when he led her to the room they'd chosen, he'd managed to make an absolute mess of said wires.

She plops down on the ground, picks up the first cable and begins to work it free from the others.
"Very close. I think we need to separate them out and see what we have. Why don't you start with that big fat one?"

The cables are such a mess it's almost impossible for him to have made them that way through sheer ignorance - though there was a great deal of that. After a certain point, however, it'd become more fun to see just how messy he could make them - and find out how much Sophie would really help.
Which made him feel really guilty.
"I'm sorry."

She's begun three piles of wires, sorted by size. Once they get this mess set to rights, she'll hunt for the instructions. In her experience, people rarely read them.

Oh, drat.
"Sometimes you have to deal with the boring stuff before you can get to the fun. It's like, um, playing an instrument. You need to practice or you'll never be good enough to play the music you like." She finally manages to loosen the cable and pull if free. This one goes in the medium pile. Nearly there.
"A friend and I were just saying a carnival would be fun. What other things do you like to do?"
Reply
"What kinds of things do you like to do? Other than riding a horse and doing other-than-practicing."

She tugs on the cable and places it into the small pile. Good heavens. There are far too many wires here. She hopes he didn't gut the television.
She relents eventually. "I like to read--just about anything. If it has words, I read it. Puzzles." She thinks a bit. "I enjoy sledding and ice skating, watching clouds, time with friends, long walks--there! Got it!" Sophie places a wire into the big pile. "I quite like puns."
Just because he couldn't--or wouldn't--answer didn't mean she had to act the same way.

"Then you must have liked the Joker! I think. I've heard. He was great with words."
Another wire comes loose in his hands, and he coils it around his fingers for a while, before adding it to her piles.

"He left us. He's gone, but, yes, he had a way with words." She straightens out the last of the wires. "There! That didn't take long, did it? Let's hook this thing up."
She can smile at him now.

"You're a genius Sophie, thank you thank you thank you!" Springing up is filled with energy, but the hand he offers to assist her in rising is all old manners drilled into him as a child. "What do we do first?"

"See the end of this cable? The little drawing tells you which side is up. There should be a slot right...there. Go ahead. Stick it in. That connects the game console to the television. Now let's find the one for the DVR...."
Sophie continues to chatter, glancing occasionally at Christophe. "And this cable goes right there and the Joker said he spoke to you?"
Yes, she is watching to see what he does.
