So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Great movie. I really did enjoy it. There's a fanboy side of me that cringes at a few of their changes, but for the most part, they really nailed the spirit of the matter. It's also hard to criticize anyone for changing things since there are technically 3 versions of the story before this movie, all with their own little quirks and changes.

I read a review that pointed out how poorly the deep thought scene was done, and I have to agree. Say the word "42" in any group of even mildly geeky people, and you'll get a whole slew of bad quotations from the book revolving around that scene. But most people, even those who haven't read the book, didn't laugh when deep thought delivered the famous line, which should be one of the greatest parts of the movie. Just something about the timing, I guess, which is a shame. Other then that bit of a sore spot, everything else translated very well. The excerpts from the Guide were pee my pants funny, and many of my very favorite scenes were translated over word for word. The Whale bit, much of Slartibartfast's dialogue, and the constant use of towels were absolutely great. Some stuff got cut which made me a bit sad. Ford talking the feller at the beginning into taking Dent's place in front of the bulldozer, and the second half of the Babble Fish explanation, were both a bit missed. But it didn't break my heart not seeing them. Some of the new stuff was also very funny as well. The emotion gun, or whatever, I really did enjoy. Especially the Guide's explanation of it.

So if you've read the books and like them, go see this movie, it's worth it. Even if you haven't, and you've always wondered what the deal is, I feel safe in saying you'd enjoy this movie quite a bit, and it'd spur you to pick up the books.
