I'm taking tae kwon do now. I had taken Karate for a while as a midget.. er.. kid, and really enjoyed myself. Couldn't continue at the time due to family money issues, you know how it goes. Well, a buddy of mine is taking a class at the Y with his daughter, and invited me to join 'em. I did, and so far I'm really pleased with it. It's a much healthier way to pass a couple nights a week, and eventually I think I'm gonna get to break a wooden plank in half with a body part, which is cool for some reason.
The funny part is how much flexiblity training there is. I mean, in some ways, I think this is just Yoga for guys. The female mind is more fulfilled by something like Yoga, with the centering of one's self and the emotions and the like. Tae Kwon Do, on the other hand, gets you some of the same flexibility and general healthy lifestyle, but with the added bonus of learning to kick someone in the head. Now of course, women take Tae Kwon Do, and Men take Yoga. So I'm not trying to be sexist here, even though I'd probably assume any guy who takes Yoga is probably gay... But it's definitely one of the first things you think of when you're trying to do the splits in a Martial Arts class.
