Earthsea

Well, Tivo'd Earthsea and finally got around to watching it last night. I've never read the books myself, but I'm always up for some good fantasy. Since I don't have knowledge of the books to compare it too, I can't say it was horrible. My biggest complaint is that it was obvious they were trying too much to be like other fantasy movies.  Fans seem enraged over the whole deal, though.

I consider myself pretty laid back as far as fandom goes, and changes don't bother me too terribly much. But some of the changes detailed here by the author of the book seem pretty surprising. The biggest change, evidently, was one of race. Evidently the vast majority of the characters were supposed to be of darker skin. It surprises me that moviemakers are still scared of a non-white cast, but I guess that's the way the world works still. Personally, I think the world detailed by the author seems much more interesting then the one shown in the miniseries, and I'll be reading the books as soon as I have the chance.
