the mezz music festival

well, i'm pretty bored and sick, so i thought i should probably not keep everyone in suspense any longer, but this could go for a while, so sit back and relax and try and take it all in.

friday i left work early. packed up my shit and waited for christabelle to come and pick me up (she was a bit late, so i had to hook into my first beer before we left). between brett and i, we were taking 72 cans of alcohol and a bottle of green apple liqueur - we figured that would be more than enough to cover us for two nights camping at the meredith music festival. it was a pretty warm day and the drive is two hours. we got to the queue and we noticed the forecast storms were on their way. this meant we had to be action stations once we got in the gate to find the others and set up our stuff. once in, we did a bit of a drive around the site, but couldn't see anyone we knew, and after having gotten the car bogged in a patch of road that was particularly muddy, we decided to set up in any random area that was free. as soon as we did set up, all of a sudden, carloads of live journalers started rolling up to camp with us because it turns out we were first there. so we quickly helped them set up their tents, (or just kinda looked like we were helping, but secretly just drinking) as the dark skies rolled over...

we managed to get everything sorted in time to enjoy a couple of beers before the storm hit. there was a lot of thunder, a lot of lightning, a lot of rain and a lot of hail. my tent blew over, i got saturated, brett left his camera in the rain, my beer spilt in brett's tent while i was running around trying to save my tent, and we ended up in the car with christabelle and a well stocked esky. th oh! the torrential rain didn't last long - just long enough to make the whole place a mud heap. so we ventured down to the stage to watch some bands, and eat some corn on a stick and some baked potatoes with ham, cheese, beetroot and coleslaw (so good - especially the corn, but especially the potato). i was pretty blind by this time, but i managed to see

always

my sons

theredsunband

ground components

and cobra killer.
everyone was pretty hammered and afterwards, i staggered around the pink flamingo bar for a while during those immortal lee county killers or whatever they are played, before deciding to call it a night... of course i was the last one back to our site.... but of course the first one up and drinking again at 9am.
so the clouds had gone and all that was left was sunshine and beer. i promise, i put so much sunscreen on, but as always, i still got quite burnt. i watched my disco who were awesome, but i didn't take a photo. by this stage of the day (11am), i was kinda too drunk to know what was going on. i did a bit of band watching from afar such as

wolfmother, but basically i just walked around with random friends getting more wasted.

this was when i bumped into some people who seemed to be taking advantage of the mud in ways most hadn't thought of...

this was followed by a bit of totem tennis action

and then some young heart attack.
soon i found myself back at the camp site drinking with many people and having a ball -

that was when i fell off my chair. it had been a scorcher, but once again, the dark skies were rolling in (see first picture), so we battened down the hatches so to speak, and drank more. it was the storm that never really eventuated, except we did get some lightning and thunder just when the dirty three were doing their schtick on stage, but obviously, i was oblivious to most things and all i wanted to do was eat a roti wrap

and hang out with those corn selling carnies (how happy do i look?). after they had pretty much finished, we went and watched some outdoor cinema classics, such as that aussie one where the hospital burns down and all the patients are running around burning and all the actors have such exaggerated accents. after this, we went back to the stage to watch spiderbait for some old times sake magic, but unfortunately they were pretty crap. every song sounded familiar, but that's because all their new stuff sounds pretty much the same as what they were doing back in '96. at least they ripped out old man sam which i ho down danced to. when they stopped, it was time for dexter to hit the decks with his mates and do some awesome dj-ing, but unfortunately it was pretty much the same as last year. i suppose when you're as pissed as i was, it doesn't really matter, because i still loved it - especially the mixing of cat power's 'free' with the eurythmics' 'sweet dreams' and then slipping into the police's 'roxanne'. very well done, but heard it all before which was a bit disappointing. so dexter finished at 4am and i had managed to find brett and give him the last can (yes, all 72 were drunk), and we ran back to the car to stash the esky and then head to the pink flamingo bar to buy more beer and hang with mono people (urgh!) and more mud wrestlers, and then back to the stage area to watch some funky beats djs. soon the sun came up and everyone except me went back to base. i decided to go for a walk around the meredith camp grounds, which i soon found out, are quite big. i helped a homeless man (i don't know what he was doing out there by himself with no teeth) out of the muddy gutter. i went back to the tent and crashed - luckily there was no longer a swimming pool in it. i woke up about an hour or so later with what could have turned into a killer hangover, but i went down and ate a sausage and egg sandwich from the meredith community tent, and i felt much better. all i did on sunday was put more sunscreen on and tried to stay out of the sun, because everyone kept saying how burnt i was. i missed the tai chi because i was too scattered and forgot it was on. i missed all the bands on sunday, and we left before the meredith gift started, so i missed seeing a bunch of naked people running down a hill.
