Thank you for your insight, this is exactly what I need. I also thought in "Daddy's Boy" that House's relationship with Blythe was less functional than it appeared on the surface, simply from his later comments to Cameron about Blythe. I wanted to explore that a bit in this ficlet, in preparation for the other story I'm working on.

In "Distractions" we learn that House was booted from Hopkins for cheating. There was no mention of his family at all in that episode. But, in planning out this story, I decided that that event must have underpinned Wilson's comment to Cameron in "Daddy's Boy": "[House] hates being a disappointment."

It's very clear in "Daddy's Boy" that House's parents are not involved much at all in his life. To me it seems obvious that House is the driving force behind that; John does try to make an effort, even if it's gruff. For me the question was why does House push even his parents away? The Hopkins incident seems a likely reason. At some level perhaps House still can't forgive himself for how he shamed his parents. Maybe it's part of his obsession with truth and lies; he's still trying to make up for what he did but at some level he feels he can't.

(It also could suggest that John is not upset anymore at House for cheating at Hopkins either, but he is upset in that House's continual rebuffs are painful to Blythe; and that's the real source for their confrontation. That's for another story.)

I do figure Blythe has to be stubborn in her own way, to continue reaching out to House even though he keeps pushing her away. (Especially if it's been going on for 20 years--again, only an extrapolation.)

if she really thinks that losing Stacy is the worst thing that ever happened to House, well, that doesn't ring true for me.

Excellent point, and I agree. I didn't intend that to refer to his pushing Stacy away, but rather to his overall loneliness. I should clear up the confusion there (perhaps refer to Wilson's comment in "Daddy's Boy" about how it's worse to watch House being miserable?)

As you can see I'm extrapolating a lot here from "Daddy's Boy" and "Distractions". I did include a couple of lines in the draft about how Blythe suspected that House felt she was still disappointed in him for cheating, even after 20 years; and that she'd tried to convince him he was forgiven, but to no avail. I cut them for brevity, hoping that the words "in disgrace" would suffice. Would it be more clear if they were put back in?

Again, thank you for your comments, definitely lots of food for thought.
