This is my first post to this comm, so if I get it a bit wrong, please point it out!
Do you find that gen fics get overlooked because people prefer to read about pairings? Sometimes I'll skip gen fics, simply because it's not what I'm looking for at the time, or because most gen fic just doesn't do it for me - but then I end up missing out on some great fic simply because of my general mistrust of gen. Fortunately I took a minute to read this.
Title: Belief, Faith, Trust

Rating: PG
Spoilers: Up to 'Meaning'
Essentially it's a 6500 word character study, but it's as satisfying as a perfectly plotted piece. It's divided into sections headed by a quote from the show, taking the reader through House's childhood, fellowship, relationship with Stacy up to his infarction and ketamine treatment. It takes everything we know about House and puts it together, until House's motivations behind his words and actions are perfectly clear.
“Are these people completely incapable of telling the truth to each other?”
“You said I’d be able to keep it.” Greg stood next to the bicycle his father was loading into the car to take to the Salvation Army.
“No I didn’t.” Dad tied the trunk shut.
“Yes you did,” Greg said. “When you brought it home you said if I didn’t get in trouble at school that we could take it with us.”
“That was before I got the posting in Egypt,” Dad said. “There’s no room.”
“You promised.”
“Greg, don’t be a baby, you’re almost ten years old.” Dad opened the car door. “We’ll get you another bike,” he said. “I promise.”
“You promised before.”
Dad closed the door and started the car. He leaned out of the window. “Well then you’ll just have to trust me, won’t you?”
Greg watched Dad back the car out of the driveway and onto the road.
It explores House's issues with trust, showing his progression from trusting child to cynical adult. The best part of this fic, however, is the section about why House has Cuddy and not Wilson as his medical proxy - it's about the closest thing in the fandom to getting inside House's head.
