Dry Erase Rose

Allison Cameron had been staring at the whiteboard for close to ten minutes. The problem with that was that the whiteboard was completely empty. She blinked her eyes a few times to clear her vision. Cameron slowly stood up from her chair and walked toward the board, her eyes still fixed on the whiteness. She picked up one of the markers and began writing slowly and deliberately. Cameron had way too much on her mind recently and felt compelled to just write everything out; perhaps staring at the list would push her into action. As her hand glided the dry erase marker over the smooth surface, she continued to think and zone out. Finally, Cameron stopped writing and studied her words:

Mail has been sorted, email answered.
Toxic coffee has been brewed.
Cover some of House's clinic hours.
Work my own clinic hours.
Check in with Foreman and Chase.
Paperwork/patient files.

It was a To Do list of sorts which really had very little to do with what was plaguing her mind. She picked up the eraser and wiped the board clean in a few vigorous strokes. After placing the eraser back down on the whiteboard ledge, Cameron resumed her thoughts. Why was it that her mind always wandered to him? He was acerbic and blunt and yet no one had seemed quite as intriguing as him. He constantly invaded her mind and she found it difficult to concentrate.

She was drawing now while she thought. The black marker in her hand drew the stem and leaves of a rose. Cameron switched to the red dry erase marker and added the delicate petals of the flower. It was a secret of hers that she had taken several art classes as an undergrad. Satisfied with her art, she recapped the red marker and placed it back on the ledge. The rose was staring back at her from the bottom left-hand corner of the whiteboard. Rather than erasing it, Cameron let her eyes admire it for a moment. Her thoughts began to settle in the back of her mind, and she smiled. He would, of course, return to her thoughts later on, but for now she was able to focus and get back to her work. She pivoted away from the whiteboard and sat back down in her chair returning to the medical files that, up until now, had been completely ignored.

whiteboard, cameron
