But there are two glaring absences among the crowd. Every time she spots the empty chairs near the bar or realizes that no one has commented on the size of her ass in hours, she feels a pang of an emotion she can’t quite label. Guilt? Loneliness? Regardless of its name, that feeling is a sure signal that things just aren’t right without them here. She’s become so accustomed to the amicable, albeit slightly awkward, oncologist making small talk and attempting to mend the bridges his surly friend has burned and the crippled diagnostician bitterly undermining everyone he encounters that she has no idea how to respond in their absence.
She hates the part of her that misses them, the part that feels obligated to be with them. She hadn’t been exaggerating when she’d said that anyone who gets close to him gets hurt; it’s practically a universally accepted truth. She’s aware that House has stepped over boundaries that should never have been crossed, and he might possibly have done actual damage to her career. She also knows that Wilson is his best friend, and he’s more than capable of taking care of House. Still, she yearns to be there, to help, to get some answers.
It’s easy to push the moments where she gets lost thinking about House, hallucinations, and the hospital Wilson is currently checking him into, aside if she smiles and puts her attention on socializing. Though it is certainly not a foolproof plan, she truly is able to distract herself from her problem, and she’s sure no one even notices that something might be amiss. With the exception of the current and former members of House’s diagnostic team, no one in attendance would ever give his absence a second thought.
She returns home from the wedding late that night, and she’s more than a little exhausted. This ordeal with House has been more taxing than she could have imagined, and, though happily socializing at the wedding wasn’t difficult, it certainly took a little more effort than she’d realized.
Once Rachel is tucked away in her crib, Cuddy stands in front of her answering machine. A red light blinks insistently, informing her that she has an unheard message. She doesn’t need to check the Caller ID or listen to the message to know who its from, to know what its about. Still, she’s curious, even if it is just to learn that her speculation is correct. So, it might be like opening a can of worms, but she pushes play anyway.
“Hi Lise, it’s, uh, it’s James. I checked him in about an hour ago.” She hears his voice falter, and she can almost picture him closing his eyes and attempting to blot out whatever image of House has been engrained in his mind before continuing. “I think I’m going to stay here for a few days; someone should be nearby just in case. So, uh, I won’t be in to work on Monday. Maybe later in the week. So just give me a call if you need anything. I have my cell.”
She listens as his voice trails off, and there are several long seconds of silence before he actually terminates the call. If all this has been earth shattering for her, she can only imagine what it has done to Wilson. It occasionally strikes her that all either of the two men have is each other, but it’s never been more obvious than in this moment. The only person in the world more focused on House than she is, must certainly be Wilson.
Resigned and knowing that House is in good hands, Cuddy resists the urge to pick up the phone and call Wilson. Instead, she turns away and decides not to open herself up to a world of even more hurt.
