Renting gives me no assurance that I'll have a place to live the next week, the next month, the next year.

Owning the house pretty much does. (even foreclosure takes a lot of time, more than a landlord's going to give you for eviction)

SOMEONE has to own the house and pay the price on it, and if the landlord isn't local and friendly, good luck getting him to actually fix anything that goes wrong. When I rented, I did so from individuals. But from what others have told me, that's actually rare. And even then, I had a couple of dud landlords, though nothing on the level of some I've heard about.

Landlords have an incentive to find good people to not only rent to, but to keep re-signing leases year after year. Sure, you have slumlords, but they're renting to flakes who might be gone tomorrow ( ... )
