In the Courtyard on a Birthday Afternoon

The roses have just begun to bloom in the House of Arch courtyard; whether that's due to nature or a charm helping them along is immaterial. Ingress loves the courtyard. Every girl of nine should have the opportunity to put together and take apart a robot. Simon doesn't disagree, but that might possibly be because he sees how firm Kaylee is about it.

You'll learn some stuff, Kaylee tells her. You shouldn't be afraid to make mistakes. Or ask for help. It's not gonna work right the first time, once you get it all put together -- but figurin' it out is half the fun. And then you come find me, and we'll program it up to make it do fun stuff.

It's not a present she'd've given a six-year-old -- which is how old Ingress was when Kaylee first met her. Younger, when Simon first met her. But she's old enough for it now.

Kind of blows the mind, when you think about it. Watching kids grow up.

Kaylee leans back against a tree, Simon standing next to her, and watches Ingress go over to Megwyn. Simon isn't saying much, and neither is she. And in a bit they'll go over to Tom and Door and do the grownup talking thing. But for now they're standing, and watching.

And it doesn't quite get uncomfortable, as they watch Ingress chatter to other guests from atop Megwyn. And before it can, Kaylee tilts her head up, and smiles sweetly, and asks Simon if he'd like to get his rear end handed to him in a game of croquet, and maybe the Lady Door and Lord Ostium might like to join them.
