This is seriously coincidental, but I just finished re-reading Wuthering Heights. I've read it several times before, but I felt it was in need of a re-read. I always thought House was a pretty good comparison to Heathcliff. After reading the book again, I felt it actually helped give me some perspective on House and the House/Cuddy relationship. Anyways, I've never actually watched a Wuthering Heights movie and was looking for one that might be available, did a search and came upon this quote from Andrew McCarthy, of the Brontë Parsonage Museum, in relation to former Prime Minister Gordon Brown who had compared himself to Heathcliff. McCarthy quipped:
"Heathcliff is a man prone to domestic violence, kidnapping, possible murder and digging up his dead lover. He is moody and unkind to animals. Is this really a good role model for the prime minister?"
I couldn't help comparing that quote about Heathcliff's character to House.
Domestic violence: The car crash into Cuddy's house. - check.
Kidnapping: House kidnapped at least 2 POTW that I re-call: the soap opera star & the Vietnam War vet.
- check
Possible murder: As far as we know House hasn't murdered anyone, but he wasn't too upset over what Chase did (S6), or Cameron did in Informed Consent, and there are a lot of people here who think House's behaviour in the car crash was attempted murder, so the possibility is strong. - check
Digging up his dead lover: Okay, both Stacy & Cuddy are still alive. Still, House has a lot of experience in digging up dead bodies, so if one of them were to die he certainly would be capable of doing this. - check
Moody: Is there even a question of this? - check
Unkind to animals: He ended up saving "Steve", but tried to kill Wilson's dog, and hated Wilson's cat. Not a big pet person. - check.
I just thought it interesting how well House fits into that description. You can add misanthropy, isolation, and bitterness/rage to that too. House has also probably experienced humiliation, degradation and powerlessness as a youth, I suspect as well.
