Summary: Chase is in a daze, James wants to know why.
Author's Notes: It started off a drabble, and grew.
Chase had spent the day walking around in a daze, it hadn’t effected his work in fact his work was excellent, but … done in a daze. As House wouldn’t tell James the reason behind Chase’s stupor, he had resorted to asking the surgeons, who regularly took James’ lunch money in their gambling, what the bets were. Harris, the chief surgeon, gave odds of 4 to 1 were given that he’d gotten into House’s Vicodin stash, 20 to 1 was that the goofy smile was from watching that “Skippy the Bush Kangaroo” marathon that had been running and, 100 to 1 was that Cameron had ravaged him an empty exam room and announced she wanted to have his babies. The last one, incidentally, was closest, just not in the linear sense. When James returned to his work he had won twenty dollars in a quick game of ‘guess what that patient has’. Being House’s best friend had its perks.
Three patients and several piles of paperwork later, James had long ago stopped measuring work in conventional hours, Chase walked into his office. James ignored him at first, he was still in a stupor, probably didn't even know where he was. But Chase smiled the goofy smile that had been plastered on his face for the last 8 hours and 37 minutes, yes he’d kept count, no he wasn’t stalking Chase, well maybe a little bit, and he would deny it to his last breath that he harboured a crush on the Australian.
When it was apparent that Chase wasn’t going to be the one to start speaking, James did,
“Was there something I could help you with Dr Chase?”
The smile persisted, but at least Chase started talking, “I know why your marriages failed.” He emphasised this with a point on James’ chest.
James smiled, he doubted it, House knew and his second wife had suspected well screamed accusations while chasing him around the house with his baseball bat.
“Really?”, he raised one eyebrow, a trick he had learnt to annoy Lisa.
Chase lent over the desk separating the two of them, grabbed James by the tie, light blue with green stripes, and kissed the older man.
It wasn’t a spectacular kiss by any means, but then Chase did something with his tongue which made James melt.
When Chase pulled back, James’ dazed look was almost the mirror image of the one Chase had, and still was, sporting. Licking his lips James remembered who had first shown him that little tongue trick.
With a smile he met Chase’s eyes; “House ruined you for all others too?”
The goofy smile, was answer enough.
End.
