Jacob said "I'm going to ask you a really simple question with a really complicated answer, OK?" I said OK, and he said "what is the meaning of life?". Of course I said "42" but he would not accept that answer.
So I thought for 30 seconds or so, and in light of my recent life experience the answer came clear. I said:
First, all living beings are meant to reproduce. For humans, that means having babies and taking care of children. So in a very real way, the meaning of my life now is to take care of you.
And second, I think humans are meant to build things. Whether it's creating art, or communities, or music or machines, we are meant to make things.
In return Jacob told me his answer, which sounds like something from summer camp or from a book he has read. He said the meaning of life is "love, creation, and knowlege".
I said yes, some people want to learn, or explore, more than to build. But other than that omission, his answer strikes me as very similar to mine.
What an interesting conversation to have while getting ready for bed!
