Retro Rib, with modifications.
Pattern: Retro Rib socks from Winter 2004 Interweave Knits magazine, modified
Yarn: 2 balls Regia Bamboo (bamboo, wool and polyamide)
Needles: US 1 DPN's
Modifications/Notes: The written pattern is for cuff down socks, but I wasn't sure how far each ball would go. I only have 2 balls, one for each sock and it was gift yarn and I don't want to go through the hassle of hunting down another ball and I not going to get the same dye lot. To solve this issue, I am making the socks toe-up so I will have enough to complete the pair and not run out with an inch of toe left to go. When the yarn starts running out, it's time to make the cuff and cast off. Also, I had started these socks on US 2 DPN's and didn't like how loose it was. I moved down to US 1's for a firmer fabric and modified the number of stitches for circumference and placed small traveling cables up the sides of the leg to compensate for the extra stitch count. I didn't have quite the right number to continue the pattern the whole way around. After going down a needle size, the toe-up method will really help when I run out of yarn. I won't have to guess how long to make the cuff to have enough to finish. I tried an invisible cast on, one different from the usual provisional cast on I use, and I left the waste yarn in place (the black dashed line in the toe) until I'm done, because it's kind of nifty. I killed the camera battery by leaving it plugged into the computer. I couldn't get many shots of the sock after that, and the detail of the rib isn't showing up. I'll model them after they're done. The bamboo blend yarn is very interesting. It's sleek and silky, but you can feel the bit of wool in it. The elasticity is rather like cotton (aka very little give) but it's a fun fiber to work with. I wouldn't have bought it myself (I'm set in my ways like that), but it's really nice to try it out.
