If you haven't heard, Geocities is closing on October 26, 2009. Geocities has played an important role in the history of the
fandom. On Fan History Wiki, we want to help chronicle the history of this fandom on Geocities before it is lost forever. We'd love to have you involved.
One way that we're trying to preserve the history of the
fandom on Geocities is by creating articles about
stories on Geocities. So far, we have information about # stories. These articles use
Template:StoryGeocities. If you want to create a new article about a story, you can copy and paste the template into an article with the title and author. If there are a lot of stories you'd like to add to Fan History, you can create an excel file with columns for title, author, fandom, url, archive name. This can than be e-mailed to support@fanhistory.com and we will add it to Fan History for you. The stories can be written by you or by others.
In preserving
stories, we are not copying the text of those stories. We're just creating articles about them to get a feel for what fandoms were big on Geocities, when stories were written, and so that long term, trends in the fandom can be assessed. (When did
slash become popular in the fandom? What were the major
AU themes? Did and when did the fandom embrace
PWPs?) We're also looking to see how fandom responded to certain stories. Because some people have issues with their stories being linked to or discussed in places where they can't control, if you find an article about story you wrote,
we'll delete it upon request.
If you don't feel comfortable creating new articles, we'd still appreciate if you could contribute by editing the
article to include more information about the role of Geocities in the fandom.
Thank you for your help!
