http://www.jsonline.com/news/milwaukee/62846317.html A Milwaukee police officer and a Riverwest bartender helped rescue four people from a burning home early Wednesday.
The bartender first noticed garbage cans had caught fire at a house in the 900 block of E. Wright St. just after 2 a.m., according to the Milwaukee Police Department.
The flames at some point jumped to the house and the bartender started banging on the door of the home, police said.
About the same time, a police officer on patrol saw the fire, ran up to the house and broke down the back door, police said. The officer helped get the owner of the home out of the blaze and other arriving officers helped to get three other occupants out of the three-unit dwelling, police said. No one reported serious injuries.
Firefighters say the blaze caused about $20,000 worth of damage to the home. Police said the fire appears to have been intentionally set and they're investigating the blaze.
My friend Shana had apparently JUST moved into this building over this past weekend. Just unpacked, just settled in, and BOOM! Everything gone.
Her best friend Vega has set up a paypal account for donations. I think Liz K. is the only other person on my friends list who knows her, and i realize that money's tight for all of us, but if you feel like you want to help, you can check out Vega's blog
here.
Can't help but think of the fire at Clarke Foods last year and about Lindsey and me watching the place burn after getting Science! safely out of her apartment next door. What the hell, Riverwest? This is Milwaukee, not Detroit.
