I’m here on a plane right now. Somewhere between Chicago and San Antonio. It’s about a two hour flight. I’m glad I’m coming back home. Renssalaer was fucking awesome. I totally want to go there now. I think it’s my number one choice. I’m applying to Renssalaer, Duke, Rice, and good ol A&M. The weather was beautiful. I wish I could take everyone with me. But it was nice doing something by myself for a while. A little scary, but exciting. I haven’t done any of my homework, which sucks. Oh well. Dam, I got a test in Calc on Monday. I stayed with some Latino/Hispanic girls. They lived in an apartment on campus. One was from the Dominican, one from Ecuador, and one from Puerto Rico, and one white girl. I felt so bad for her. Actually, I never physically saw her. It’s cool that all the minorities are close knit, but they’re so close knit that they keep away from everyone else. I don’t want it to be like that. I want to hang out with everybody, not just Hispanics. They talk funny speaking English and Spanish with east coast accents. I’ll have to demonstrate when I get back. In fact, you’ll probably hear a difference in my speech. Just give me a week. I’ll be back to normal. It was funny though. They were so nice to me. I saw crystal rock if any of ya’ll know her. She’s doing fine. She says she loves it there. I’m excited to apply there. Early decision baby! Nov. 15.
Thursday
anyways…I got there on Thursday about five hours before everyone else. I got to new york and I didn’t know where to go or who to talk to or where to meet. I didn’t know anything. I saw these other two girls who looked young and just as lost as I was. I asked them if they were going to renssalaer too and they said yes, so I hung out with them. They were from Oklahoma. They attend a residential high school. They live in dorms and they have professors and stuff. One girl said she hadn’t seen her parents in two weeks. I was like dam. So then this man approached me asking if my name was laura. And I said I was and he told me he was with renssalaer. So I went with him to a shuttle bus and they took us to the campus. Campus is pretty small. There’s only about 6,000 students. Cfazy, huh? It’s very selective. Okay, so I’m listening to music on my labtop and Heartbeat mvt. 1 comes on. And I pretend that I’m conducting the band. What a loser. Anyways. I forgot what else I did on Thursday. Oh I had ice cream. And we just chilled in the admissions office. Oh yeah, we talked a bunch of minority organizations there on campus. Then we had dinner. Then we made cars out of legos and a battery and our car won and our group won a free mug. Then we had an academic Olympiad. We took a little test and me and my partner advanced to the next level, but we didn’t win. The prize was $250 scholarship to Renssalaer if you attend. Fucking badass. I really wish I could have gotten it. Does that count for a scholarship that I applied for? I had to take a test. I got to my dorm, took a shower, and watched a movie called Y tu Mama Tambien. It was about sex. I don’t know that movie was pretty dumb. Soft core porn basically. Those guys couldn’t last over two minutes. Stop jacking off! Build some resistance dude. That ain’t gonna please your girl.
Friday
Friday we talked to different students and financial aid, and applications, and sports, clubs, everything about the college. Oh yeah and I went to a class with my host, Erica. She had to finish homework so we went to the Johnson Center and I slept for like two hours. Then I went with her to her class. Too bad it was her calculus three class. I fell asleep and so did she. Nobody was even paying attention. One guy was playing games on his labtop and a lot of other people were asleep. I thought it was pretty funny. Then we had lunch and we did some teambuilding crap. We took campus tours and stuff. It’s so beautiful. It was a little nippy, if you know what I mean. It wasn’t too bad. But they said it gets down to 10 degrees there. But I could get used to something different. Then we had lunch and dinner. I went to the game room and played DDR and air hockey. We had a scavenger hunt. Except it was in a folder. There were questions and we had to find the answers in the packets they had given us. I won. I won a cd case. Then we had a raffle and I won a nice Renssalaer blanket worth $30. pretty sweet. They gave us pens and pencils and folders and binders and they paid for all our meals and ice cream and free games. and because I was part of this program, my application fee is waived! So fucking sweet! Friday night we had karaoke and then a pizza party at the black house, a black sorority house. But I couldn’t eat anymore cuz they were feeding us 24/7. I got back to my dorm and I watched Whose Line and South Park.
Saturday
Renssalaer was having an open house for the general public. I just walked around campus by myself looking for different sessions to go to. I went to this one lab and the guy I talked to reminded me of kyle olsen hard core. He had long frizzy hair, one earring, the same eye color, and smile, and everything else. He was a dual philosophy/computer science. Weird, huh? He was working on an AI project. But he was a grad student. The other guy, kyle was working on building a machine brain that thinks like a human. Pretty neato stuff they got there. I saw a centrifuge and a lot of the machinery and programs they use there. Then I talked to some environmental science and engineers. They environmental science department is extremely small, but I guess that’s good. More time with your professors for tutoring. More opportunities. It was fun getting lost and finding places again. It was cold and rainy though. Then I was tired of walking so I went to student union and just chilled there and watched tv. Then they opened the game room and I played ddr and racing, and shooting games. that was fun. Earlier in the day, one of the girls said that most of the guys in her floor were named dave. When I went to the game room, I played ddr with this guy and it was funny cuz his name was dave. He paid for me which was nice. Then he was like, “nice playing with you.” That was fun. Then I played that shooting game with my friend Noel. But I died like five times and had to put in extra quarters. They had pool tables, ping pong, fuuzzball, however you spell it, and three bowling lanes. In Chicago I met this couple going to san Antonio. They’re on my flight right now. They were talking to me and they were cool. They actually knew about John Jay and stuff. And now I’m sitting next to a guy from Sweden. He was speaking a different language and I asked him, “if you don’t mind me asking, what language were you speaking?” so he’s from Sweden. He’s here for one week of work and one week of vacation. I didn’t ask him what his career field was though. But now he’s asleep. I love flying. It’s so cool. I feel so special getting invited to see the school. There were only twenty other people. There were people from Oklahoma, Chicago, the Broncs, Harlem, New York, and Puerto Rico. I didn’t know what to say when I heard Harlem. I was like I’m from texas. He’s like so yeah you wouldn’t know what harlem was. The black girls from Chicago was super nice to me. They were cool. The black people look the same as they are at our school, but these guys were smart. I actually enjoyed talking to them. Especially the girls, they were just so nice, friendly, and funny. Anyways, I had fun.
P.S. except for the fact that i lost my luggage. it never arrived in san antonio. hopefully it'll be there at the airport tomorrow and i can pick it up.
