i just arrived in heredia. the entire area feels like a festival, parade, grand holiday. which i suppose it is. the people here seem to be for the most part very excited and happy about voting and expressing whom they support. cars honk and parade flags representing the different parties. children run and play through the streets and central ( Read more... )

and all the while people smiling broadly. it feels to my romantic and nostalgic eye as a pure form of nationalism. there is no military or police presence. just people voting for their party, one of many parties which get air time on the tv and many of which (certainly more than 2) have a good chance of winning.This is one of the things I've never understood about U.S. politics. No one could form a cognent enough argument against the two parties to be worthy of more than "Well, you're throwing your vote away if you vote *blank*" come election time? Nobody could do the kind of fundraising and grass roots campaigning that it would take for a third party to have their voice heard during elections? No one could develop a political platform that garnered enough respect and votes for there to be at least a three party system here? Too few americans are pissed off at the current state of affairs to want to vote for a third party? Even in Canada the generally unpopular bloc quebecois manages to garner enough votes in the one province ( ... )

i have come to judge my fellow us citizens less harshly. i think they are truly powerless and uninformed. they would be angry and attempt for change if they weren't herded so effectively as consumer oriented masses. we are not just composed of the dregs of other societies. there is nothing less than about us. we are merely a product of the capitalist system. truly, though i may get a shake of heads and a backlash from my meager readership, i think my comrades are overwhelmingly the victims of this monstrosity that consumes, digests and lays its rancid feces to waste across the globe. this waste includes lost self-determination.
