Stepping into the small clearing, Yabu smiled as Takaki lifted his head and their eyes met, a grin on the younger’s male face as he patted the space next to him. Yabu took a seat, crossing his ankles and bringing his knees to his chest, his arms casually holding them upright. “It’s nice out,” he commented, turning his attention back towards Takaki.

Takaki glanced up at the night sky, the stars reflecting in his eyes. “It is, yeah. I’m glad you came out.”

Yabu nodded, breathing out slowly and feeling his shoulders sag in relaxation. He turned away from Takaki and looked up at the stars as well, wondering what to say. The silence was comfortable, but he felt the need to break it, a slight yearning to hear Takaki’s voice invading his mind.

“What are you thinking about?” Yabu asked, his voice a soft whisper as he shifted, bumping shoulders with the other. He opened his mouth to apologize, but stopped when he felt Takaki leaning against him, their arms pressed comfortably together.

“Not much, really,” Takaki shrugged, and Yabu could feel the man’s gaze turning towards him. “You?”

“You, actually,” Yabu admitted with a smile, chuckling a little when he saw Takaki’s cheeks flush. It amazed him, that even after all these years together, he could still make the man blush like he did, back when they were kids and so unsure of themselves.

“Why are you thinking about me?” Takaki laughed, always so humble, and Yabu grinned as he leaned over and brushed his lips against the man’s tanned cheek, pulling back as Takaki’s laughs died down. He remained close though, bringing his arms away from his knees and towards the ground, using his hands to steady himself as he shifted his legs, bending them slightly as they stretched out.

“I wanted to hear you speak, but I wasn’t sure what to ask,” Yabu brought a hand to Takaki’s cheek, brushing aside some of the long strands that had fallen into the other man’s eyes.

“A simple how was your day is always a good start,” Takaki replied, his tone slightly joking as he smiled. Yabu rolled his eyes, sighing, but the grin never left his face as he closed the distance between them, pressing a chaste kiss against Takaki’s lips. As he pulled away, he snuck in another quick peck, making Takaki’s nose wrinkle as he laughed at him.

“So,” Takaki turned back towards the stars, and Yabu followed suit, their hands now clasped as he asked, “How was your day?”

“If you continue to cry any further, I’ll have to hug you,” Chinen looked up, a weak chuckle leaving his lips as Yabu sat down next to him, wrapping a comforting arm around his trembling shoulders. Chinen gratefully leaned into the touch, taking deep breaths as he tried to wipe away his tears.

“What’s wrong?” Yabu asked, his hand squeezing his bicep and then rubbing it. Chinen sighed and closed his eyes, turning towards Yabu and burying his face in the others chest as he whimpered, feeling another set of tears about to attack.

“Just worn out,” Chinen said, his voice hoarse as he coughed, hot tears making their way down his cheeks and onto Yabu’s shirt. He quietly apologized, to which the older male shrugged off, pulling Chinen closer to him.

“You’re the optimist though, it’s not like you to be sad,” Yabu’s hand moved from his bicep to his hair, and Chinen sighed as those thin fingers ran through his hair, lightly stroking at his ears and scalp. It felt good, and Chinen could feel himself relax as his tears slowly ceased, leaving behind only hiccups and sniffles.

“Even guys who write songs about smiles can have a bad day,” Chinen chuckled at his own joke, pulling away from Yabu’s grasp so he could wipe at his face. His cheeks felt sticky under the dried tears, and his eyes were puffy, swollen messes, stuck together at the creases and lashes clumped together.

“Well, I hope my favorite optimist can get his smile back soon,” Yabu replied, bringing Chinen back into his arms for a hug. He felt a smile tugging at his lips, almost there but not quite, until he felt a soft kiss pressed against his forehead.

The smile stretched across his face, comfortable and familiar, and Chinen thanked Yabu for helping him bring it back. “Anything for our little sunshine,” Yabu winked, to which Chinen laughed at, brightly and loudly, the way it should be.
