prequel chapter one chapter two chapter three chapter four Hearing a shout, Yuto rolled over in bed and rubbed at his eyes, groping around for Keito. Finding that the boy was no longer in bed, Yuto got up and found his clothes, redressing before leaving the room.
“What the fuck?!” Yuto shouted, suddenly awake as he looked around at the chaotic situation; Keito and Ryosuke were helping Kei into the room, who was bleeding profusely from a gunshot wound to the leg. Yuya, who’s hands were shaking as he told the boys to lay him down, began to try and extract the bullet, Kei screaming in pain as he did so.
“What’s going on?” Yuto caught Yuri, who had just ran by him with blood streaking his face, his eyes wide and his breath coming out in short pants.
“Kei, Yuya, Ryosuke and I went out to get some vitamins, since we were running low. Then one of those damned things showed up and Yuya tried to shoot it, but he missed and hit Kei instead,” Yuri closed his eyes, trying to control his breathing, “Ryosuke and I brought Kei back here, as quick as we could, while Yuya tried leading them away. They followed us though, and now Kota, Hikaru, Ryutaro and Daiki are fighting them outside.”
“Oh god,” Yuto felt himself choke as he ran towards the front of the house, grabbing the nearest gun and taking off down the stairs. When he burst out to the other side, he paused, taking a step back as he surveyed the area quickly.
There were a lot of them, not as many as he and Keito fought in Shibuya, but definitely enough to make this difficult. Cocking his gun, Yuto began to fire into the crowd, careful where he aimed and keeping his eyes on the others; he didn’t want to accidentally shoot them, or be shot by any of them.
This was just insane. A few minutes ago he had been sleeping in bed, enjoying the warmth of his blankets, and now he was outside, shooting bodies left and right. This was their life though, the unpredictability of it all; it was foolish, he realized, to feel so comfortable and forget that the world around them was an apocalyptic mess.
“Ryutaro, duck!” he shouted, the boy obeying his command without a word and he shot a bullet into the head of a female that had been creeping up behind the boy.
“Out of ammo,” Daiki shouted over the commotion, “Going inside, cover me!”
Yuto and Hikaru watched the boy’s back as he ran through the crowd and into the house, kicking and elbowing the corpses as he went. Once he was safely inside, Yuto turned his attention back to the others and began firing again.
“Yuto, did you see how Kei was doing?” Kota ran over to him, arms swinging as he ducked behind Yuto, reloading his gun with the ammo he had in his pocket.
“He was bleeding a lot,” Yuto said in between shots, realizing he’d need to reload soon as well, “Yuya was trying to remove the bullet.”
“Fuck, and it’s not like we have pain meds or anything,” once Kota was done, the two switched, Yuto taking the offered ammo and reloading his gun while Kota protected him.
“It looked painful as hell, yeah,” Yuto finished and stood back up, standing side-by-side with Kota. “What if he…” Yuto shot to the left, unable to voice his worries.
“Kei will be fine, Yuya won’t let him die,” Kota said, nodding his head determinedly, but Yuto could still hear the doubt in his voice. “No one is going to die, alright.”
“Alright,” Yuto dropped the subject and the two split up, Kota running over to Ryutaro and Yuto towards Hikaru. Daiki came back a moment later, a rifle in his hands as he began to shoot from the door, Yuri next to him. That meant that Keito and Ryosuke were still with Yuya and Kei, and out of harms way.
“Yuto, look out!” Hikaru shouted and swung his gun around, hitting a teenager in the face who had gotten too close, “Fucking hell man, pay attention!”
“Sorry,” Yuto ignored the shivers running down his spine as he continued to shoot, careful to keep looking around. If he got bit, after all this time…no, he didn’t even want to think about it.
Running back towards the door, Yuto pushed past Daiki and Yuri and up the stairs, grabbing a rifle like Daiki. He paused for a moment though, looking down at Kei and the others on the floor.
Yuya’s hands were soaked in blood, and his jeans and shirt were splattered with some of it as well. Beside him, was a pair of bloodied tweezers and a bullet, which had small bits of skin clinging to them. Feeling sick to his stomach, Yuto glanced over at Ryosuke and Keito, who were both pale and looking down at Kei.
Kei, oh god, he was breathing slowly, dried tears making his cheeks glisten as he stared up at the ceiling, his eyes moving back and forth slowly. He was clearly in shock, from the incredible amount of pain and blood loss, and didn’t even seem to notice the worried faces around him.
“Yuya,” Yuto started, but stopped, his voice strained as he struggled not to cry.
“He’ll be okay,” Yuya whispered, his eyes never leaving Kei’s, “He didn’t lose too much blood, his body has just shut down for a moment because it was in so much pain. Give it a few hours, and he’ll be more alert. It’ll take him a few weeks though to be perfectly okay.”
“That’s good,” Yuto muttered, catching Keito’s eye for a moment, before running down stairs, rejoining the others.
There were only ten left, and between the six of them, they took them out quick enough. Returning to the house, everyone treaded into the room carefully, looking down at Kei with teary eyes.
They hadn’t come this close to losing someone since Ryutaro had been hurt, and that was almost a month ago now. It was scary, and it was another proving point to Yuto to not get too comfortable with their life; any one of them could die, whether it be an accident or getting bitten by those things, and death wouldn’t politely ask first before taking one of them away. It would happen quickly, horribly, and there would be nothing they could do to prevent it.
The house was very somber for the next week, all of them jolted by Kei’s accident. The boy was doing fine, just as Yuya had said, but everyone, like Yuto, was still reeling from the shock that it happened, and the fear that something could happen again.
Turning over in bed, Yuto pulled Ryosuke closer to him (the boy had taken to sleeping in their bunk after the accident) and tried to wake him from his nightmare; he had been having them ever since Kei got hurt, whimpering in his sleep and crying out the boy’s name.
“Ryosuke, wake up, it’s only a dream,” Yuto whispered, gently shaking his shoulders, “Come on, it’s only a dream. Kei is okay, he’s fine.”
“Poor kid,” Keito murmured from behind him, kissing the back of Yuto’s neck, “He’s grown really attached to Kei since the accident, don’t you think?”
Yuto nodded, shushing Keito though when Ryosuke finally opened his eyes. A moment passed, and then the boy pushed himself further into Yuto’s arms, crying his heart out against his chest.

Like Yuri had done to Ryutaro, Ryosuke stuck firmly to Kei’s side, taking care of the boy religiously. It was sweet, and a bit surprising, but Yuto was happy nonetheless; despite his initial statement, it seemed that Ryosuke was now more inclined to find a bit of love, after it was almost taken from him.
Kei didn’t seem to oppose the idea either, and after a few days of wondering when something might happen between them, Ryosuke came into their bedroom one night, smiling ecstatically.
“Eh, what’s up with you?” Keito asked, sharing a knowing glance with Yuto.
“Nothing,” Ryosuke blushed a little, blowing out the candle on their nightstand. Crawling into the bottom bunk beside them, Ryosuke yawned and snuggled into Keito’s arms, wishing the others a good night.
“You too, Ryosuke,” Yuto wrapped an arm around Keito’s waist and found Ryosuke’s hand, lacing their fingers together.

“They’re cute together, huh?” Yuto nudged Yuri, pointing to Ryosuke and Kei; the older boy had decided to get out of bed today, and was leaning heavily on Ryosuke’s side, his eyes closed. It was obvious he was still in a bit of pain, but he didn’t look as deathly pale as he had that day, and his breathing was normal and even.
“They are, yeah,” Yuri smiled, staring at the two of them affectionately.
“Hey, we need more candles,” Kota said as he entered the room, looking around, “Who wants to go get them?”
“We’ll go,” Yuri volunteered, helping Yuto up as they walked to the door and grabbed their guns. “See you in a bit,” Yuto called out, saluting Kota as they left.
Making their way down the street, guns held loosely over their shoulder, Yuto and Yuri grinned as they chatted. The sun was brightly overheard, and they could hear birds chirping in the distance; it almost seemed like a normal day, and Yuto couldn’t help but chuckle at this. A normal day?
He didn’t even know what those were anymore.
“I hear something,” Yuri mumbled, breaking him away from his thoughts, quickly grabbing his gun and holding it out. Yuto followed suit, straining his ears to catch any noise.
A quiet bang, to the right. Yuto swung around, his finger on the trigger.
Another, to the left. Yuri looked up at him nervously, wondering what to do.
The bodies came filing in from both sides, about a dozen on each. Yuto and Yuri quickly began to fire at them, their attention focused on making the fatal shot, and not entirely on their surroundings.
Had there been more of them there, it probably could have been prevented; they only needed vitamins though, a trip that was usually quick and effortless. Not this time though, and Yuto hoped that Yuri wouldn’t blame himself for this, for there was nothing that could have been done.
Screaming in pain, Yuto felt his head spin as he staggered away from the corpse behind him.

“GUYS!” Yuri shouted as he stumbled down the street, his body struggling to support Yuto’s height, “HELP!”
The group came rushing out of the house, their faces worried as they looked around for Yuri; spotting him quickly, and Yuto, Kota and Hikaru rushed forward and grabbed the boy, helping him to the ground as Yuri collapsed beside him.
“What happened?” Keito asked as he came over, kneeling down beside Yuto and holding him close, not noticing the way Yuto had flinched. Looking over at Yuri, the boy’s eyes were casted towards the ground, tears spilling down his cheeks as he hugged himself.
“What’s going on?” Keito pulled back and looked at Yuto, and then at Yuto’s arm, which was bleeding heavily. Prying his lover’s fingers away from the cut, he gasped in shock when he saw it, a cold dread filling his sense.
“No, oh god, no,” Keito looked back towards Yuto, disbelief etched across his features. It was true though, he could see, in the way Yuri kept apologizing under his breath, and Yuto blinked back his tears, nodding his head tiredly.
“No,” Keito let out a choked cry, clinging to Yuto with all his might, “Yuto, you can’t, you promised, YOU FUCKING ME PROMSIED ME!” he shouted, punching the younger boy in the chest as he screamed, “YOU PROMISED YOU WOULDN’T LEAVE ME!”
“I’m so sorry,” Yuto coughed, bringing Keito back in and pressing his lips to the boy’s forehead, trying to ignore the harsh sting that he couldn’t even kiss his boyfriend one last time; he wasn’t going to take the chance of possibly infecting Keito. “I love you, so much.”
“I love you too,” Keito tearfully replied, letting out a horrified cry when Yuto grabbed the gun next to him. “What are you doing!?!”
“I can feel it happening, Keito,” Yuto pointed the gun to his head, closing his eyes; he didn’t want this to be the last thing he saw, everyone’s pained faces staring down at him, Ryosuke clinging to Kei with panicked breaths and Keito shaking from the force of his cries. “I don’t, want to change, and I don’t want you guys to have to kill me. I’d rather do this myself.”
With his eyes closed, he didn’t see Keito leaning in, closing the distance between them one last time. The kiss lasted barely a second, and then Keito was gone, protesting loudly as someone dragged him away.
Finger on the trigger, Yuto took a deep breath - he felt hungry, could hear their blood pumping, could smell their flesh so strongly -
And then it was all gone.
