Ennui banters:

1. Listening to Haydn's piano concerto # 3 just now, I notice that the fortepiano sounds like a toy piano.

2. I watched The Hours again, which increased my understanding of the movie, and perhaps on life as well, however bleak it may be.

3. Tristan and Isolde was better than I thought it would be. Surprisingly, Franco was the only weak actor in the movie, though he was certainly lovely to watch. It was infinitely more entertaining than Tristan und Isolde, and about 4 hours shorter. It was very pleasant to see that they stayed close with the original / Wagnerian version of the plot. They got rid of the famous Love Potion, which seemed like the ONLY element anyone ever remembered about the story, from Byron to Donizetti. If you will overlook the endless fucking of the two, overt Romanticism with soft moonlight and ruin Roman villas, and anachronism, it is a decent film.

Nick, to answer your question, Dave Hickey didn't really say anything else much more interesting other than what I mentioned in my last entry, well. . . maybe. . .

1. "I should write a book called 'Heterosexuals in the Arts'"
2. He talked about how Contemp./Modern art is all about making the audience feel "edgy," and Mapplethrope certainly did that.
3. Modern art is like S & M, it is all about control, domination, and pain. The painter is like the Master, inflicting pain and discomfort because the Slave (ie audience) wants it; of course, the Slave can say the safe word any time he/she wants to stop the whole process. In this society of instant gratification, the audiences have to work to get their "cookies."

Pretty general stuff, nothing too shocking or academic.
