Nothing is revealed about Diego Armando until 2012, when he's 27 years old. By then, he works for the Grossberg & Co. Law Firm as a defense attorney, and is known as one of their finest lawyers. He isn't the lead on the case that day, however, instead serving as second chair to the rookie Mia Fey on her first case. The client is a man named Terry Fawles, a man already on death row but on trial for another murder. During the course of the trial, Mia, with support from Diego, is nearly able to prove the Terry's innocence by revealing the truth about a young woman named Dahlia Hawthorne. Dahlia, through lies and manipulation caused Terry to be convicted of her murder (obviously faked), and nearly does the same in this case. Terry is so convinced by the false personality Dahlia showed him, however, that instead of letting the truth fully come to light, he poisons himself using coffee provided by Diego. By the time any of them realize it, it's already too late, and Terry dies there. Mia feels responsible, and nearly breaks down right there. Diego, however, tells her that it isn't over, crushing his coffee cup in his hand and injuring himself. He then tells Mia that a lawyer can't cry until everything is done.

Over the next six months, Diego and Mia both work to find evidence of Dahlia's crimes, and grow closer to each other in the process. Their relationship came to a quick end, however, when during a meeting at the courthouse cafeteria, Dahlia poisoned Diego's coffee. Though it was reported as a murder (and that was Dahlia's intent), Diego actually fell into a coma for five years. He woke up one day, however, at the scent of a doctor's freshly brewed coffee. The damage from the poison was extensive: he requires frequent treatment for the damage to his internal organs and central nervous system, and he is forced to wear a visor to see anything at all. Additionally, his previously dark hair turns white.

Diego learns that Mia did eventually manage to get Dahlia convicted and sentenced to death row, though not because of his case. Dahlia manipulated a boy named Phoenix Wright to hide evidence, and she ultimately killed another in her attempt to get that critical evidence back, framing Phoenix for it. Though the smitten college student did whatever he could to keep Dahlia from being arrested, Mia was able to prove her guilt along with Phoenix's innocence. Tragically, Mia later died at the hand of another, but not before she took on that same Phoenix Wright as a partner in her law firm. Diego also learns about a case where Morgan Fey, the aunt of Mia and her younger sister Maya, tried to frame Maya for murder. At this point Diego becomes obsessed with two things: defeating Phoenix Wright, who he blames for Mia's murder and sees as unworthy to carry on her legacy, and protecting Maya, since he is certain that Morgan will again attempt to harm the girl.

Because his appearance is so drastically changed, Diego is able to take up the name Godot and enter the prosecutor's office. There he faces off against Wright in two minor cases, and loses both times. Interestingly, whenever Phoenix is the defense attorney at a trial, Godot faces him, even canceling other cases to do so. Then, in January 2019, Dahlia Hawthorne is executed. Soon after this, Godot is at the jail when Pearl Fey, Morgan's daughter, is there for a visit. He eavesdrops on the conversation, learning that there is a letter Morgan hid before her capture that she wants Pearl to read. Rushing to the hiding place first, Godot discovers a plan to have Pearl channel the dead spirit of Dahlia (who turns out to also be Morgan's daughter), and knows that the goal is to kill Maya. He leaves the letter so Pearl can find it, and begins making his own plans.

Phoenix, Maya, and Pearl go up to Hazakura Temple so Maya can take a "Special Course" in spirit medium training. Unbeknown to them, also at this temple are a woman named Iris and Maya's mother Misty, both of whom are conspiring with Godot. On the appointed night, Misty, who goes by the name Elise Deauxnim and is a famous children's author, tries to get Pearl to come to her room. Worried for Maya, Pearl instead crosses a bridge to go to the Inner Temple where her cousin is training. In order to prevent Pearl from summoning Dahlia, Misty summons her first. Dahlia, in Misty's body, goes after Maya, but is stabbed by Godot. Before she dies, Dahlia tries to fight back, slashing Godot across the face. Maya loses consciousness by this point and taken back to the Inner Temple by Godot, who then tries to hide the evidence at the crime scene. He calls Iris to transport the body, but before they can, the bridge connecting the two areas is struck by lightning and burns down. Thinking quickly, Godot uses one of the support cables to get the body across the bridge. He, however, is stuck on the other side, along with Pearl and Maya.

Godot stays hidden until the bridge is repaired. Notably, this also means he has missed the first day of the trial, but thanks to an act of attempted heroics, so has Phoenix, who ends up in the hospital after falling into a freezing cold river. Edgeworth has acted as defense for Iris, who was accused of the murder, and Franziska, his sister, was the prosecutor. Edgeworth manages to cast doubt on the accusation against Iris, so further investigation is called for. The bridge is repaired that day, and as the police begin to investigate, Godot also searches. The first person he finds is Pearl Fey, who he cheers up by giving reassuring words about Maya, along with his last cup of coffee, sweetened with cream and sugar. Phoenix is with Franziska when they receive word that the bridge has been repaired, and they come to the Inner Temple. The training chamber is locked, however, with a magic Psyche Lock that can only be opened by the one who set it. At this point Godot reveals himself, claiming to have been at the doctor the day before. He's sent Edgeworth to get Iris to open the lock. He also reveals to Phoenix that he's died once before, though Franziska questions it. Telling Phoenix that he knows good and well how Godot died, he points out that Maya, who is presumed to be trapped inside, wouldn't be able to survive the extreme cold for long. He also says at this point that if Maya does die, it's Phoenix's fault for being unable to protect her, just as it was his fault Mia died.

Phoenix investigates further, but then an earthquake happens. Edgeworth, who is terrified of earthquakes, passes out, allowing Iris to run around unattended. By the time she is found in the Inner Temple, numerous more Psyche Locks are on the door; according to Iris, they "just appeared." The locks will take even longer to remove, and by the time Phoenix is done with the case for the day, they are still there. At the very end of the day, he talks to Pearl about the role she was supposed to play, and learns that the girl doesn't actually understand the reason behind any of it, nor that the true goal was to hurt Maya, who Pearl dearly adores. When he finishes, Phoenix is wondering how he can tell Pearl the truth when Godot confronts him about the crime of being oblivious. He again accuses Phoenix of being responsible for the deaths of the Fey sisters, though Phoenix tries to claim unawareness as an excuse. Godot doesn't accept it, and says that they will settle things once and for all the following day.

But for Godot, there will be a pod-pop instead.
