Gaming and Violence

Nov 21, 2008 09:53

I can't say I've done research or anything, but I'm pretty sure that video games do not create violence in people. I'd say that social un-mooring and an inability to tell truth from fiction creates violence in people. And it's with some amazement and hilarity that I hear that PETA has come out with a non-official, pc-based version of Cooking Mama, the popular Nintendo DS game where you prepare recipes, unlock new recipes...it's pretty much one of those really cutesy, innocent games that you really can't say is destroying our children's minds...

...or can you?

I present to you: Cooking Mama: Mama Kills Animals!

PETA is protesting what they feel is an over-abundance of meat-based recipes. The video game producers has replied that they have more than 25 vegetarian recipes, and that Mama fully supports humane treatment of animals. (Full article here)

I don't think they get it. PETA wants Cooking Mama to be a vegetarian. They do not want her using meat AT ALL.

I think there's money to be made off this though. Cooking Mama, Vegetarian edition? Vegan Edition? Cooking Mama: Pastry Chef? Ramsey Edition? The possibilities are endless!

Finally, I just wanted to end on a more positive game note. One of my favorite charities is Child's Play which provides games and entertainment for children stuck in Jude's Hospitals around the world, and has started again for the holiday season. I saw it begin with just a few (4-5) locations in the states. Now they have over 35 locations in the nation as well as multiple locations abroad. Penny Arcade put this charity together to show how galvanized and positive a gamer community can be, and I'm totally proud of what they have done over the years. Even if you don't donate, it's heartwarming just to visit the site and see the work they've done.
