Welcome to the scenic Sebucus Islands, guys!
Let's take a moment to admire (and beat the snot out of) the local wildlife!
Ogres can raise their attack power. Death Wings are just like Evil Flies; they can cause poison. Kabuki Rats steal, and Hell's Triggers don't do anything special.
Garzan's rad new threads we got from the Old Wizard!
And here's Jeremi, our first town in Sebucus.
Terra: Garzan, it's a Genesis Tree! I sense a Genesis Tree!
Nathdran: That means we can save this town if we revive that Genesis Tree!
Ozma: I sense that the Genesis Tree is somewhere in town... someplace high up.
Garzan: How exciting! I want to go! I want to go to the high place!
Nathdran: Oh, brother.
More local wildlife to be found here!
Nighto Lv. 2 provides us with our first meaningful difference between Seru levels! Nighto Lv. 2 has an attack called Ultrasound, which can cause the Curse status effect, blocking our magic. It would be nastier if I used magic more often, but I don't, so it's kind of. Not really a thing. Spikefish are giant floating blowfish. They can cause poison! Kabuki Rats and Ogres continue to appear here.
I never got a good shot of what Nighto looks like under its shell, so here's a Nighto Lv. 2. Nightos are purple instead of brown.
There are some signs around here, let's check 'em out.
Amazing Sky Gardens, huh? Sounds like a hell of a tourist trap. (And the most likely location for our Genesis Tree, but that's less important.)
So there are lots of Seru monsters just kinda hanging about. We can talk to them, but they don't really say/do much of anything interesting. Growl a lot and look sad/angry/confused/afraid/etc, mostly.
A human possessed by a Seru! It's babbling unintelligibly.
Mostly.
There's some loot to be had, hidden and otherwise. The Target Chain increases our rate of successful hits and the Guardian Ring increases both Upper and Lower Defenses.
A piano player possessed by a Seru! And playing a strange song!
I think that ends our goofing off quite nicely. On with the plot progression, which means into the building that leads to that large tower.
This. Isn't very dungeon-esque. Doesn't seem to be anything else of interest here, either. Into the next room.
Ahhhhh, there's that good ol' dungeon aesthetic!Let's check this elevator here.
Of course it is.
That aside there are, of course, new enemies to be had here.
Swordies are our first Wind Seru! But not terribly notable aside from that. Guardians are much the same as Drake Soldiers, but in addition to the Windhash attack, they have the V-Windhash, which hits harder than a random encounter's attack probably should. I'm not terribly fond of Guardians. Nighto Lv. 2 and Spikefish continue to appear.
Here's what Curse looks like, by the way.
While the Rapid Elevator may be out of service, all the other elevators in the tower work just fine and there are quite a few of them! It can be pretty easy to get mixed up and lost in here.
Naturally, there is treasure to be found beyond some of the elevators as well, the Speed Ring here being pretty much the only one of interest. It's an accessory that raises the wearer's speed by 20%. It's going to stay attached to Nate for a while.
Several elevators later, we find this weird thing.
Let's see what it does!
The rapid elevator has been turned on!
And now we'll never have to deal with all the other elevators ever again! :D
And once I finish clearing the tower of treasure, it's time to head on out to the Amazing Sky Gardens.
It's a (not even terribly complicated) hedge maze surrounded by trees. Well, I'm amazed.
This is the first Healing Fruit we've gotten. Healing Fruit restore 800 HP to the entire party. It's pretty sweet.
The Forest Amulet nullifies all rot attacks. This will be incredibly handy incredibly soon.
But completely unrelatedly I swear, we should probably go check out the Genesis Tr--oh god what the fuck is that and why is it munching on the Tree
Ozma: It's a Seru!
Garzan: A Seru? I didn't know Seru could be this weird.
Terra: Have you forgotten? Seru themselves are blameless. It's all the Mist's fault. Long exposure to the Mist must have turned that Seru into such a horrible creature.
Meta: It's clinging to the Genesis Tree to absorb the energy that it emits.
Clinging to absorb nothing! There is a constant repeated munching noise over this entire conversation! It might as well be going omnomnomnomnom.
Like any good protagonist, Garzan doesn't approve of giant green mutated things nomming on Genesis Trees, so she tries to yank the Seru off.
There's a flash of light and she gets knocked back.
Boss fight time!
Meet Berserker! Why it's called that, I'm not really entirely sure. This video's a ways past 10 minutes long, so I'm giving a different video hosting site a try. Feedback on the videos continues to be appreciated.
Berserker is our first boss that I would describe as being a "really mean" boss. He goes beyond "really tough monster" in a way that even Zeto didn't. A big reason for this is one of his special attacks, Spore Gas.
It causes the Rot status effect. Rot infects limbs and makes them unusable for attacks. How many limbs Spore Gas infects is variable, going from just one limb
to all of them.
Watch the video of the fight for a good idea of how damn obnoxious that can really get.
Berserker also has an attack that targets our entire party called Stone Circle.
It hits pretty hard.
Oh, and Berserker also has the glorious distinction of giving us our first K.O.!
Poor Nate. :(
Despite our hardships, we do conquer!
This also starts the trend of the Hyper Arts Books being drops from boss fights instead of being found in chests. This is a trend that will continue for the rest of them.
Garzan: Hurry! Hurry! Statham, we have to help the Genesis Tree!
No match for the--Nate, you're the one it K.O.'d! Bah.
Anyway, it's tree time! No goofing off for me.
This is the pattern that future Genesis Trees will generally follow. Thought I should 'cap it in relative fullness the first time it happens now that we've got out full party all Ra-Seru'd up.
Nathdran: So this is how the Ra-Seru become stronger...
Was I asleep... Or was I awake? Oh, the Mist came, then...
Woah! The Mist is disappearing, too! Something is happening! There's someone next to the Genesis Tree! They must have drove away the Mist! Oh, how wonderful!
The two of them rush through the hedge maze to greet us.
I knew it! Thank you so much! How wonderful! It's a miracle! Tell me how you did it.
What follows is a lot of pantomime from Garzan as she and Nate presumably explain our journeys so far while all we get to see is a bunch of totally skippable exclamations from our nameless pal here.
I'll hurry down ahead of you so I can tell the people of Jeremi about this miracle!
And run off he does!
And that finally wraps up that cutscene and gives us control again. First things first is the Fire Book.
Going down the rapid elevator drags us into another cutscene.
Mayor: You revived the Genesis Tree and saved Jeremi from the Mist! The townspeople have rushed over to get a look at all of you! Please, come this way.
Perfect! Don't worry about a thing! When I told the townspeople about your brave deeds, they were ecstatic!
Mayor: Oh, come now! The townspeople are so anxious to see you! Let's go! Alright, this way, please!
Ha, ha! I'm in trouble! I must return to Sky Gardens. I hope to see you again soon!
Mayor: Wearing Ra-Seru, these heroes braved the Mist and revived the Genesis Tree! Here they are, the heroes that saved Jeremi: Statham! Garzan! Nathdran!
Statham! I just adore you!
Garzan, you're so cute!
Oh I don't believe it! It's Nathdran!
Oh, dear. And the screen fades to black as our heroes are tragically crushed to death by their own adoring fans we timeskip to the next morning.
Mayor: I'm so sorry about yesterday. I never thought that would happen! I have firmly instructed everyone not to cause any ruckus this time. Well then, good luck. Good day.
Phew. Free to goof off at our leisure once more!
Right, let's goof off with Zalan later.
Mayor: Now I'm sure my limited knowledge is probably of no use to someone like you, but... If you need to know something, then just look for Hari. They say Hari knows just about everything.
Behind the inn is the bar and it is full of incredibly depressing people.
Hey, there is no way you killed your girlfriend when you were a Seru monster! So stop brooding!
He must have died while we were all possessed by the Seru.
I mean, before the Mist invaded our town, he was so vibrant! How could he be dead?
I would have been better off spending eternity in the Mist, possessed by those Seru!
But when we awakened from the Mist, so much time had gone by. Those who didn't lose any loved ones during those years are dancing here now, but... Those who lost someone to the Mist are here drinking!
Alright, that's enough of that!
I think it's on a mountain far to the north.
Good to know!
But now I'm just so happy that she's safe.
I hope that you brave Ra-Seru can make that possible!
That's why that nightmare... that catastrophe occurred when the Mist came. But thanks to you, we're saved. Thank you so much!
Which kind of reminds me that I should update the Grand List of Ways People Dealt With the Mist:
-Build a huge wall around the village (susceptible to doomlasers)
-Put on Seru and lock yourselves up, effectively time traveling to when the Mist is gone (ballsy, but risky)
-Put airlocks at all entrances (susceptible to backstabbing cockbites)
-Live in a cave (surprisingly effective!)
-Don't (has some obvious problems)
Oh, the fighting monk. He is just so cool!
We made up this song and dance to show our appreciation!
Come on, everyone, let's dance!
The origin of the Mist must lie beyond the sea.
There's a weapons shop open now.
I'm too poor for it.
Alright, let's go talk to this Zalan guy.
Zalan: I have a favor to ask of you. Will you listen?
->Yes
->No
Zalan: Oh, thank you! I have a wife and son in Vidna. I don't know how things are in Vidna, but... If they are alive, I want them to know I am safe. That's why I wrote this letter. But I can't deliver the letter because of the Mist outside town. I heard that you can travel through the Mist. All I ask of you... ...is that you deliver this letter to my wife and son in Vidna.
Statham now has Zalan's Letter!
Zalan: My wife's name is Yuma. My son is called Pepe. I hope they are safe.
Well, that's all for Jeremi. Let's head on up to Vidna, then. Hopefully along the way we can acquire the cash for that equipment I can't afford yet.
There's some new wildlife along the way.
Poisonous Worms are like Worms (including their painful slowness), but now they can cause poison! Lip Kids are just like Lippians! Oak Slimes are just like Slimes! Killer Bisons are actually a completely new model! But otherwise nothing special.
And here we are at Vidna! Hopefully it won't take too long to free it from th--
...There's. There's no Mist here. I don't understand.
Vidna is full of windmills. The strong wind they generate blows the Mist away.
Time to update the Grand List again!
Grand List of Ways People Dealt With the Mist:

-Giant windmills
Octam was once a hub of transportation, and the flying wagons were used for transport. These wagons were moved by large Seru. People would ride them and travel east to Karisto. I'm not busy now, so I can tell you more. What do you want to hear about?
->About the Temple of Rem
The Temple of Rem is a huge temple located deep inside Octam. Now, Rem is the god of time, right? Well, this person called Hari would tell everyone the prophecies of Rem. People used to say that if you had a strange dream, you should tell Hari. I'm not busy now, so I can tell you more. What do you want to hear about?
->Where Octam is
You want to know where Octam is even though you can't go outside because of the Mist? How silly! Oh, well. I'll tell you. First go north and cross the bridge, then follow the coast southeast. You'll see a peninsula sticking out into the sea. Octam is at the tip of that peninsula.
Ah, delicious knowledge!
The Gate of Shadows is an ancient ruin located east of Octam. It's called a gate, but there are no roads there leading anywhere. Some say an ancient treasure is hidden there, but nobody knows for sure. If only the Mist weren't there, I'd go check things out myself.
Pepe lives behind the hot spring. He came with his mother and got stuck here.
Hot water and steam comes shooting up from inside the earth. We use it to power the windmills. The windmills were used to cool things off for the tourists. We also found another use for 'em! As you can see, Vidna will never have to worry about the Mist as long as there's hot spring water.
So, that's pretty neat! They use the steam from the hot springs to power their windmills to keep the Mist away! I guess Sebucus is a really volcanic area, then.
(Silence) Whew! Man, I have had enough!
But I'm not done telling you our life stooorrriiiieeeessss!
Weapons shop! The walk to here from Jeremi got me the money for the stuff I couldn't afford in Jeremi, but, go figure, this shop has other new stuff I can't afford. Guess who'll be doing a bunch of grinding between updates!
Oh did you?
I guess you did! Hope you don't mind me stealing all this!
We'll get to Danpas in a bit.
Nathdran: (Surprise)
Garzan: Nathdran, what's wrong? I thought the Biron people were your friends.
Nathdran: It's just that I've violated the teachings of Biron by wearing Ozma.
Garzan: What's the matter, Nathdran? Zopu forgave you! Then why? Statham, say something to Nathdran.
->He'll understand if you explain.
->Nathdran, don't torment yourself!
Nathdran: But...
Garzan: Nathdran, Statham is right! And what's more... Ozma isn't a Seru. He's a Ra-Seru. So you didn't do anything wrong!
Garzan: That's right! A Ra-Seru isn't the same thing as a Seru.
Oh, Hari, your prophecy has come true!
Nathdran: And you are?
Allow me to introduce myself. I am called Sashia.
Garzan: Sashia, are you a friend of Hari's?
Sashia: Not really a friend... I serve Hari. I am a priestess at the Temple of Rem. Before the Mist came, Hari instructed me to go to Vidna. I was to wait for three youths wearing Ra-Seru and give them The Message.
Nathdran: Hari knew that we would come here?
Garzan: Wow! That Hari is amazing! Where is he? I want to meet him!
Sashia: I am sure that Hari awaits your visit, too. I shall now give you The Message, as instructed by Hari.
Sashia: the secret will be clear! A brave Ra-Seru will acquire a great key, the Star Pearl!
Nathdran: Four Books of Prophecy? Star Pearl? What is this, a riddle?
Sashia: Hari said that with this, the youths wearing Ra-Seru would find a way.
Nathdran: Umm...
Nathdran: Actually, not... anymore.
Things being the way they are, I am sure there are very good reasons. Nonetheless... You are the visitors that Sashia has waited for all this time. Please, rest here.
Well, at least now we have kind of an idea of what it is we're supposed to do once we finally get to Octam.
Let's go check out this Danpas fellow now.
Mrs. Danpas: If you're looking for my husband, he's underground. Just go down those stairs.
I'm really not sure about that second guy's logic there. Also if the shelter's done, why are they still jackhammering about?
Oh, well, let's go down the elevator and humor Danpas some.
Danpas: The townspeople here don't realize how horrible the Mist is. Don't you fellows agree?
->Yes
->No
Danpas: You know, you seem pretty smart. What would happen if for some reason the windmills stopped? The Mist would swallow us all. We'd all be eaten by the Seru, or possessed by them. That's why I'm preparing for when that happens. I built an underground shelter. And what do the townspeople do? They treat me like a lunatic! Fools. Fools! They're all fools! You seem to know what's going on, so if the Mist ever comes, you can hide in here. For you fellows, I'll have an especially good hiding place.
Dude, seriously, the windmills stopping would require ceasing all kinds of volcanic activity and that's not exactly something that just happens.
Let's go check out the hot springs!
Statham now has ten coins.
If you want to play a game, go to the machine and drop the coin in.
OK, coins. They will be more important/useful later and I'll go into more detail about what we can do with them when we can actually do stuff with them. For right now, it's just a slot machine, and I am kind of bad at those. I'll show you guys what they look like once we get to the place where coins are useful.
Fuck yeah free.
This is incredibly silly!
Good. Then I shall sing for you.
A ship of dreams
sails the Milky Way
Look, now, there it is
The Gate of Shadows
Hari waits there
Hari has one heart, but
Hari has three faces.
Hari has three mouths.
Hari dreams three dreams.
What a weird song.
OK, I think it's about time we went to do what we actually came here to do.
Yes, I am Pepe, but what do you want?
Garzan: Pepe's alive... I mean, of course you're alive... This letter... In Jeremi, Zalan...
I think What? sums it up quite nicely.
Garzan: Uh-huh! Uh-huh!
Nathdan: We have a letter for you from your father in Jeremi. Here it is.
Nathdran gave Zalan's Letter to Pepe.
Jeremi was covered in the Mist, but thanks to a brave Ra-Seru we are free at last. I lost my memory when the Mist first came, but now I am completely recovered. I suppose Vidna is covered by the Mist as well. I hope that the madness of the Seru has not possessed you. I have so many things to ask. It has been over 10 years since you left for Vidna, but it seems like only yesterday since we bid farewell, smiling. Yuma, does the ring I gave you still sparkle? Pepe, how many gems do you know the name of now? I want to be with you. I want to tell you how much I love you. Stay healthy and strong. Until we meet again, I won't lose hope.
Your father, Fat Fingers,
Zalan
Pepe: She said it was his fat but nimble fingers. Ever since then, his nickname around the house was "Fat Fingers." To tell you the truth, somewhere in my heart, I had given up on Father. But he's alive! Oh, thank you for bringing the letter. Thank you so much! If only Mother were alive, too!
Pepe: Oh, wait a minute! This is a keepsake of my mother. If you would, please give it to Father.
Statham and the others now have Yuma's Ring!
Pepe: Please tell Father... tell Zalan of Jeremi that his son is alive.
So, Yuma's Ring is an accessory!
Not terribly useful to us, given how little I use magic.
But in peaceful Vidna, things are downright boring. I wonder if something exciting will happen.
Hey, this guy has a fishing set. Let's check it out.
And talking to the guy again nets us some additional dialogue!
I'm tired of fishing anyway.
Statham now has the fishing tackle set.
How convenient that there's a fishing spot on the road between Vidna and Jeremi! And by on the road I mean way out of the way but still technically between the two.
So, the fishing minigame! It's not really exciting. Just like real fishing. But I'm going to show it to you anyway.
We start out viewing this stretch of water, facing straight, though I'm turned to the right here. Three types of Lures: Light, Normal, and Heavy. They yield different fish types. The set we got from the guy on the beach includes 3 of each. They aren't used up when we catch fish, only if a fish manages to break our line.
This is what casting looks like. The bar on the right basically corresponds to how far out Statham'll throw the line.
Thrilling. Thankfully, we don't have to just sit waiting here hoping a fish bites. Instead, we just start reeling the line in and hope our line collides with a fish.
It usually does! Life is how much fight the fish has left, tension is how much tension is on the line. Basically we just keep reeling and pulling the rod around to lower the fish's Life while making sure that our tension doesn't max out and cause the line to snap. Once we get it to the shoreline, it's caught!
The fish here kind of suck.
But that's OK, because the prizes do, too. There's a somewhat better fishing hole later in the game.
But enough of that, let's get back to Zalan!
Zalan: Did you give my wife and son the letter I asked you to deliver?
->Yes
->No
Statham gave Yuma's Ring to Zalan.
Zalan: This... This is the ring I gave to Yuma! (Silence) I see. So Yuma is no longer with us. I wish I could have stayed by her side. That's my only regret! (Silence) But thank goodness Pepe is safe! Someday, when the Mist is gone, I will go to Vidna! I will go to see Pepe! I know that you can make that day come!
Well, let's get to making that day come, then!
Or, uh, not quite yet.
Statham now has Zalan's Crown!
Zalan: I'm just a humble jeweler, but if there's ever anything I can do for you... Please let me know.
Zalan's Crown is pretty nice.
We also take a nap at the inn (since it's free here), and are rewarded with another one of Garzan's dreams!
Dear... can you feel it? It's Garzan! I feel Garzan's presence.
So warm... Such a pure heart. She's growing up healthily. She seems to have made some wonderful friends.
Garzan... Can you hear me? It's me... Your father...
Garzan: My father? Father! Is it you, Father? Is Mother there, too?
Yes. Both of us are watching over you, Garzan!
Garzan: I... I want to see you, Father! I want to see Mother, too!
And we want to see you. But...
All we... can do... is send you... our words... through your pure heart... in your dreams... It pains me... to send you... our words... like this...
Garzan: Father!
Mother... wants to see you, too... Garzan... We're... waiting for you...
Garzan: I'm coming. I'll go to where the deepest Mist is to see you!
And that wraps up this dream and this update, too!
Next time on Let's Play Legend of Legaia: Octam!
