Let's Play Legend of Legaia Pt. VIII -- Giant Enemy Crab!

Feb 08, 2010 02:19

First things first. Rad new equipment pics.

I am thinking I should try to get later equip shots in action so you can actually see Nate below the waist. :V

I also got a good shot of Meta while I was goofing off.

He's pretty spiky now.

Anyway, we've finally opened up the path to the Mist Generator, so I'm naturally headed in the opposite direction! First stop is Hunter's Spring to check up on Lezam. You remember him?

Lezam: Oh, me? I cannot go back to the castle. I am ashamed for failing to fulfill my duty to the King. That is why I opened a shop here. I'm a shopkeeper now! Welcome to my store!

Lezam's an item shop, which would be nicer if I, uh, ever made use of item shops (and if Hunter's Spring wasn't pretty out of the way). He does serve one nice function, though.

Those items in blue are items that are only available if you have the Platinum Card. (For the record, the Golden Compass was an alright book increases our chances of ambushing random encounters, while the Silver Compass decreases the chances the random encounters have at ambushing us.) I couldn't afford either compass even if I particularly wanted them, though, so we don't buy anything from Lezam.

On to Rim Elm! First stop, Ixis's place!

Ixis: So every Ra-Seru comes with a cute chick, eh? You're so lucky! I'm just joking, I'm just joking! Don't get upset!

SHE'S TEN.

...and so I could tell you that as long as there's life, there is always hope.

Good on you, Ixis's dad. Good on you.

Where'd you find a cute girl like that?

STILL TEN.

Village Elder: Then what about Mei's mother, Maya?
->She's alive and well
->Well, it's complicated...

Village Elder: Oh, how wonderful! Mei will be so happy! Ahem! Then promise me, Statham! I want to surprise Mei. Keep this a secret from Mei until Maya comes back.

Well, she hasn't agreed to come back yet but I guess we probably shouldn't tell him that....

Speaking of Mei, let's go pay her a visit!

Garzan: I'm Garzan, a friend of Statham's!
Mei: Oh, I see. Garzan. So you're Statham's friend. I'm pleased to meet you. I'm Mei. I'm Statham's friend, too.
Garzan: If you're Statham's friend, that makes you my friend, too. Nice to meet you, Mei! Statham, I like Mei! She's nice!

So the nice thing about playing on an emulator is that the details are a lot clearer and easier to notice than on a TV.

By which I mean I never noticed that knot of frustration Mei has here. Hee.

Next stop is Tetsu!

Uhhhhhhhh.

->Yes
->No

Tetsu: So some disturbance occurred without my knowing it. I wish it were not true, but if you say it is, Statham, then I must believe you. (Silence) Ah, and you there...

Nathdran: Master Tetsu, I am called Nathdran.
Tetsu: Nathdran? I remember you being a mere child... You have grown strong so quickly! That reminds me. What happened to Songi?
Nathdran: (Silence)
Tetsu: There must be some reason. But it matters not! I won't trouble you to explain. Nathdran, as a fellow Biron disciple, please look after Statham and Garzan for me!

Tetsu then offers to teach us some Arts, but since I already know 'em all because I am a cheating cheater that cheats, I turn him down.

That wraps up Rim Elm for now, so it's time to finally head on over to the Mist Generator!

The world map enemies here are the same guys by East Voz: Hornets, Gomboos and Twin Tombs.

Nathdran: It's a smokestack! Thick Mist is pouring out from that smokestack!
Ozma: That is where the Mist that engulfed Drake Kingdom comes from!
Terra: Now listen, Garzan. This castle has caverns deep underground. Deep inside them is a Mist Generator! That's where the Mist is coming from!
Garzan: I'll destroy the Mist Generator! I want to get rid of all the Mist!
Terra: You're a good girl. That's right, Garzan. We have to destroy the Mist Generator!
Meta: Once we reach the Mist Generator, we can stop the Mist with our Ra-Seru powers. But this is a vital castle to the enemy, and will be heavily defended. Proceed with caution!

Alright, let's go! There's nothing outside here, so we head on into the castle. After a small staircase, we arrive here.

Enemies!

Zenoirs are the only new enemy here, complimented by the return of Gimard Lv. 2 and Theeder Lv. 2. Zenoir are our second fire Seru and another one of my favorite Seru designs. Through thorough application of the Ivory Book, everybody absorbs it and Nate also absorbs the other two.

A little ways in is this lovely little chest.

Awesome.

Really awesome. The electricity also lingers for a few seconds after the attack finishes, so it looks pretty cool if you kill and absorb a Seru with it.

I also manage to get some good shots of Ozma and Terra around here.

At the end of all these little islands is an elevator, which we take down to the next floor.

Oh, hey, what's back here?

It's a new weapon for Statham!

Zenoirs continue to appear down here, but the Gimards and Theeders don't, being replaced by Nightos and Vera Lv. 2. Vera Lv. 2 has no notable differences from Vera, aside from color scheme. I get Nate to absorb one ASAP. He'll be needing it soon. He also absorbs a Nighto while he's at it.

They weren't kidding when they said it was a short sword.

There's nothing of particular note down here in these various twisty passages. A number of healing items, and the fire and wind resistance raising accessories, neither of which are of particular use at the moment. After a while we hit this Suspiciously Placed Memory Statue.

I know what's coming, so I do a little rearranging.

To refresh your memories, Mei's Pendant raises our HP, and the other two raise Upper and Lower Defense.

Hi, Songi.

Nathdran: Statham! Garzan! Step aside. Leave Songi to me.
Songi: Nathdran! How forgetful you are! It was I who defeated you once before! Have you forgotten how much stronger than you I am? You must be suicidal to fight someone as skilled as I am in the fighting arts. Oh, how pitiful! Your extreme stupidity brings tears to my eyes! Well, come on! I'll finish you quickly, so you'll feel no pain.

Songi! As always, click the pic for a video of the fight. Songi hits fairly hard, about 180 or so damage in melee.

Hyper Wave is the only special attack he has to his name. It hits for a little less than his melee does.

It doesn't take too long to take him down.

Songi: I am pleased! After all, a weak rival is so boring. We both use Seru -- that makes us comrades. So let's call our little meeting today a draw. As a fellow Seru user I'll tell you something you should know. The lord of this castle, Zeto, is waiting for you all by the Mist Generator. Nathdran, be very, very careful if you value your life. Don't lose to someone like Zeto. Farewell!

And Songi runs off, as is his habit.

That's what I'd like to know, Nate. That's what I'd like to know.

Garzan: I don't like that Songi! I hate him! Next time he comes, I'll fight him, too!
Nathdran: Yes, I suspect the day will soon come when we shall all have to fight him... Now let's hurry! To the Mist Generator!

First things first, though, let's take a good look at that Mettle Ring he dropped.

Oh, sweet. This'll be more handy later when our AP use starts outstripping how much we gain by Spiriting. I'll slap it on Garzan now anyway, since she's the one that spends the most AP.

Not too much farther along, we hit another elevator room.

Enemies down here are Zenoirs again and the addition of Gizams. Nate absorbs a Gizam and with that he has all the same Seru the rest of the party has, excepting that Viguro Statham managed to absorb.

This floor is really brief and ends at this door.

Let's blow some shit up, guys.

Ozma: With our faith, Ra-Seru and humans can destroy this machine together!
Meta: This machine does not belong on Earth! Let's go!

Of course, before we can get anywhere, Zeto teleports in.

Zeto: You should have accepted the Mist obediently. Instead, you resist so foolishly. I, Zeto, will now put an end to your foolish resistance!
Garzan: I know you. You're the one who bothered me at Mt. Rikuroa! You did those horrible things to Terra the wolf! I... I... I'll make you pay!

Our motley little crew rushes forward and what the--

(The platform doesn't actually disappear, I think I just timed my screencap a little poorly.)

Zeto! Click him for a video of the fight. Zeto is by far our hardest hitter yet, and got really close to being our first boss to cause a K.O. He's also a first example of a charged attack!

His first turn features this:

Nice of the game to warn us what that means. It basically translates to "Use Spirit to not die!" He doesn't attack or anything on this turn, just calls a wave. Which arrives next turn.

This, mind you, is the damage output with everyone spiriting. It's even nastier without it. His melee's pretty nasty, too, about 250-ish damage in one go.

He also has a second special attack, Poisonous Bubbles.

It can cause poison, you might've guessed. Also does about 100 damage, so it's not all that bad.

Woooo, leveling up!

Zeto: Those Ra-Seru, who don't even know the Mist's salvation? Forgive me, Prince Cort!

Huh, I wonder who this Prince Cort fellow is. Zeto's sure not telling, since he promptly breaks into pieces.

RIP Zeto. You were kind of a dick.

Meta: We must work as one! Attack!

And we get another one of those FMV's my emulator doesn't particularly care for!

Basically the Mist Generator turns to stone and then crumbles into dust.

The castle itself also collapses and lets out one final burst of Mist.

And thus Drake Kingdom is officially Mist-free! \o/

Garzan: Terra? Terra, are you sad? I can tell that you're crying, Terra.
Terra: You're so kind, Garzan. But don't worry about me.
Garzan: But...
Meta: After all, the detestable Mist that surrounded Drake Kingdom is now gone!
Terra: But we mustn't rest yet! We still have to destroy those who created these infernal machines!
Ozma: There are also people in other areas still suffering in the horrible Mist!
Terra: Resting now is the same as giving up!

With that, our group of heroes run off.

But what's this?

Hey, that looks like a Ra-Seru Egg! Weird, what's it doing here? Shouldn't we--

...OK, uh. Never mind then.

Zopu: There must also be a Mist Generator in the north, which is still enveloped in the Mist. Honorable Nathdran!

Zopu: I see. Well, then, Nathdran! I want you to go after Songi. That Seru on Songi's arm... Obviously it is not a Ra-Seru. And I cannot help but suspect the influence of some evil presence, Zeto perhaps. Fighting the Mist also means tracking down Songi.

Suddenly, Garzan runs in.

And Maya follows soon thereafter.

Garzan: Maya, you're really going back alone? I can go with you.
Maya: Thank you, Garzan. But the Mist Generator has been destroyed. I'll be alright. Come visit me in Rim Elm sometime. We'll have fun talking together again.
Garzan: OK!

Maya: Statham, you're a brave man, and I'll be sure to tell Mei and Val how brave you are! Well, it makes me sad to watch people walk away from me. So I'll leave ahead of you. Goodbye, everyone.
Garzan: Goodbye, Maya.
Zopu: Yes, good luck to you.
Nathdran: Have a safe journey.

And with that, Maya leaves.

Nathdran: Statham, to the north of Drake Kingdom, people are suffering because of the Mist. But we can save them.
Garzan: Statham, to the north! Let's go to the north and fight the Mist!
->Follow me, everyone!
->I've got a bad feeling about this...

Nathdran: That's the spirit! Statham, you're the leader! We're all counting on you!
Garzan: Statham, you're the greatest!

She blows Statham a kiss.

It's pretty cute.

Zopu: But you saved the Drake Kingdom, and together, the three of you can save the whole world!

And now we're back in control and free to goof off as I please.

Zopu: It goes against our teachings, but this new era forces me to permit it. Yet you were raised at Biron, and have a heart forged at Biron. Nathdran, never forget the harmony between love and strength that Biron has taught you!

The monastery seems so deserted now.

But when it gets too quiet like this, it feels so lonely.

OK, enough sad panda-ing from Biron, let's pay Rim Elm another visit.

Ooo, hot springs, neat.

Ixis: So don't worry about Rim Elm anymore, Statham. Just leave everything to me!

Oh, I was very worried, Ixis.

She might have family in Karisto Kingdom, in the northern frontier.

Karisto, huh? Interesting.

Village Elder: Maya says you went through a lot at Biron. My experience and knowledge don't mean anything in times like these. But I can say this: Live a virtuous life. For the honest dedication of the virtuous will always be rewarded! Statham, I am proud that you are a child of Rim Elm!

Alright, time to visit Mei and Maya!

Mei: Statham, you're a liar! You're nothing but a liar! Why didn't you tell me? About my mother... Why didn't you tell me you went to Biron Monastery to look for her? Why didn't you tell me? I was so worried about you! I never knew you put yourself into such danger for me. Why didn't you tell me?! Why? You should have told me! I was so worried!

Mei: I don't know... I'm so happy to have you back home, Mother, but... And it was Statham who brought you back, but... I'm so grateful to Statham, and at the same time I feel so guilty...

Mei: I'm angry at Statham for not telling me, and angry at myself for not knowing. (Silence)
Maya: Oh, Mei! You don't have to cry! There, there now! I don't know what to do with you!

Mei: Garzan?
Garzan: Mei, your mother came home! You're not lonely anymore! So why are you crying? Why are you crying? Did Statham do something that bad? Was he mean to you? If Statham was bad to you, I'll teach him a lesson! So don't cry, Mei, OK? When I see you crying, it makes me want to cry, too! I don't have a mother! I'm all alone!

Garzan: Wah! Waaaaaa! Waaaaa!

Mei: So many emotions came out all at once, and I was just confused.
Maya: Garzan, I want you to think of me as your mother, OK?
Garzan: Uh-huh.
Maya: Statham, I want to ask you a very important favor. I want you to find Garzan's mother, like you found me. Would you do that for me? Garzan tells me that she dreams about her mother often... In those dreams, she hears her mother's voice calling to her.

I don't want another lecturing. :C

Maya: That's the Statham that I know! That's the spirit!
Nathdran: Statham, Garzan, we should get going.
Garzan: (Whimpering)
Maya: Nathdran, you take care of yourself, too!
Nathdran: Yes, ma'am. Thank you very much!
Maya: Statham, I believe in you.
Mei: Statham, thank you so much.

Maya: Songi! I can't stop wondering how he is. Songi is proud, but he's not a bad child. If you find out anything about Songi, please let me know!

Not a bad child? Sure, I guess. In the sense that he's not a child. 8|

Mei: But, Statham, you're always so reckless! That's why I always... (Looking regretful) I'm sorry. I'm sure everything will be alright, Statham. Be careful, Statham! As long as you're safe, that's all that matters to me.

And that wraps Rim Elm for now! Time to progress!

Remember this cave?

Sure you do!

This door is open now!

Old Wizard: Now that the Mist has amazingly disappeared, I was just waiting for a customer. Welcome to my shop. I have everything and anything. Come on into the back.

The Old Wizard runs an inn and a weapon shop. We don't need the inn. At all. Ever. And it cost money, too, so fuck it.

The weapon shot has some pretty sweet swag, though. Some pretty sweet swag that, predictably, bankrupts me. Let's rob him to make up for it!

Dude's got some pretty sweet shit to steal. Dude's also got a lever here.

Let's pull it!

Statham moved the lever.

Hey, that door's open! :D

Doot doot running through a cave. There's no enemies here, though, interestingly enough. So the cave basically functions as a town. Despite not being one.

Old Witch: I am called the Old Water Witch. I've been in business here for forty years. But it's been ten years since I've had any customers! I'm so happy now! Well, come on in! I run a store and an inn. You must be tired. Come along and I'll get you a room for the night.
Do you want to spend the night?
->Yes
->No

Old Witch: Well, enjoy your stay!

Huh whoa what is this

Nathdran: This feeling... It's probably a dream, yet it feels different from an ordinary dream. What's the matter?
Garzan: A voice! I hear a voice! Who is it? My mother... It sounds like my mother!
Garzan! I am not your mother!

I have a message for those who are in the human world and who are with the Ra-Seru. They are the true words of Rem. Go to Octam, the ancient yet eternal city, far away in the heart of Sebucus. There, compassionate human beings will learn the true meaning of all dreams!

Garzan: Hari is going to tell us what our dreams mean...

Garzan: Oh! Hmmph! I want to see Hari!

Let's talk to this girl over here now.

Oh, good! I dream a lot, too! Dreams tell you about your future, you know. Do you want to learn how to tell the future from your dreams?
->Yes
->No

I knew it! I knew you were interested in dreams! Somewhere on the Sebucus Islands is a person who lives in a dream world. His name is Hari.

Garzan: Can Hari really tell you what a dream means?
Yes. My grandma told me so.
Garzan: He's in Octam. Hari is in Octam, right?
Octam? I'm sorry, I don't know much about the outside world.
Garzan: Oh. Sigh! Statham! I've made up my mind! I'm going to look for Hari! Statham, will you help me find Hari?
->Of course I'll help you find him!
->First we must destroy the Mist!

Garzan: Good! I'm so happy! Thank you, Statham!

I've heard it was a beautiful town famous for an amazing tree and the Sky Gardens, but now, who knows.

An amazing tree, you say? HMMMMMMMM.

Doot doot theivery.

Doot doot leavi--

Oh wait.

Statham now has two Doors of Wind!
Garzan: Old Witch, what is this?
Old Witch: What? You don't know about the Doors of Wind? Let's see, where do I start? It's an item that lets you fly -- anytime -- to a town you've visited at least once. You can't use it in caves or inside a town, but... Many islands make up the Sebucus Islands. Use the Wind Door to get around there.
Nathdran: Thank you for your kindness.
Old Witch: Oh, don't mention it. Well, good luck to you.

So, yeah, Doors of Wind. Teleporting to towns. Pretty neat. I won't actually use 'em much in the Sebucus Islands because I like the grinding that walking everywhere provides, but they come in handy when one wants to go from area to area.

Doot doot more cave running.

And welcome to our first view of the Sebucus Islands, which we will get more properly started next time!

Next time on Let's Play Legend of Legaia: Jeremi!
