With Lucy gone we've started looking for another pup to keep Ethel company. Geesh, it didn't seem so hard the last time we were looking. Perhaps our wishes have become more refined. **shrug** We'd really like to get another Australian Cattle Dog pup, female, blue mearle with full mask if at all possible. Here's where we're at so far.
1) Clover - found this one on petfinder.com. Six month old female with the color and markings we wanted. Looked to be purebread. We emailed the foster home. Two days later we get an email back telling us that Clover had been adopted that day.
2 & 3) Smoke and Foxy Lady - found these two on craigslist from a distressed owner in Chattanooga. She could no longer afford her six pets (three of which were ACD pups) and was looking for homes for each. I emailed to find out if she had a female with the markings we wanted. Turns out one of the males was masked and the female was plain but both blue mearle. Considered adopting the two but declined when we saw the next ad and replied.
4) Sophie - this was a 6-week old purebread ACD pup, female and marked exactly the way we wanted. We called and spoke to the owner who was selling the pups for a reasonable $75. We told her which one we wanted and agreed to drive to Nashville to pick the pup up this coming weekend. Well the breeder calls me this afternoon and tells me that she "accidentally" sold our pup. She promises to help us find another but Jose doesn't want to deal with her. **sigh**
So I contact the owner of Smoke and Foxy Lady and asked her if she would be willing to let us adopt. Nope. She felt scorned because we passed her pups up for another that was exactly what we wanted. She's going to keep her pups for as long as she can and figure out what to do later. I can see her point but it's still a little selfish on her part to let her ego get in the way. I guess she's written us off as flakes. Too bad. We would have loved those two and given them the care they need.
So we're back to the beginning. I've got one lead in Clermont, FL that a friend has agreed to pick-up and meet us 1/2 way if we can make the adoption happen. But to be honest, we're all feeling a little burned and can't take another disappointment so soon.
